# The Best Pokémon for Kids to Learn With: A Parent's Pick (Opinion)

This is an opinion piece. There is no official ranking of Pokémon for learning, so these are our own picks as the people who make pokee.si: Pokémon whose real facts make good practice for reading, maths and logic. Every number below comes from the Pokédex data on this site, so you can check it with your child on each Pokémon's page.

Our short list: the three Kanto starters for logic, [Unown](https://pokee.si/pokemon/unown) for letters, [Shuckle](https://pokee.si/pokemon/shuckle) for numbers, [Wailord](https://pokee.si/pokemon/wailord) and [Joltik](https://pokee.si/pokemon/joltik) for measuring, [Magikarp](https://pokee.si/pokemon/magikarp) for patience, [Eevee](https://pokee.si/pokemon/eevee) for cause and effect, and [Pikachu](https://pokee.si/pokemon/pikachu) for reading.

## The picks at a glance

| Pokémon | What it helps practise | The fact to start with |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Bulbasaur](https://pokee.si/pokemon/bulbasaur), [Charmander](https://pokee.si/pokemon/charmander), [Squirtle](https://pokee.si/pokemon/squirtle) | Logic and rules | Fire beats Grass, Water beats Fire, Grass beats Water |
| [Unown](https://pokee.si/pokemon/unown) | Letters | 28 forms: A to Z, plus ! and ? |
| [Shuckle](https://pokee.si/pokemon/shuckle) | Adding and comparing | Defense 230, Attack 10 |
| [Wailord](https://pokee.si/pokemon/wailord) and [Joltik](https://pokee.si/pokemon/joltik) | Measuring | 14.5 m tall against 0.1 m |
| [Magikarp](https://pokee.si/pokemon/magikarp) | Patience, counting up | Evolves at level 20 |
| [Eevee](https://pokee.si/pokemon/eevee) | Cause and effect | 8 evolutions, each with its own trigger |
| [Pikachu](https://pokee.si/pokemon/pikachu) | Reading and sounds | The name comes from two Japanese sound words |
| [Ditto](https://pokee.si/pokemon/ditto) | Multiplying | Six stats of 48 each |
| [Sudowoodo](https://pokee.si/pokemon/sudowoodo) | Looking closely | Looks like a tree, but it's a Rock type |

## Logic: the starter circle

The Grass, Fire and Water starters are the best first lesson in rules. Fire beats Grass, Water beats Fire, and Grass beats Water. Bulbapedia compares it to rock, paper, scissors, which many children already know.

Ask "who wins?" with two cards or two Pokémon pages, then swap one. Once that's easy, add a fourth type. Our [type chart for kids](https://pokee.si/articles/pokemon-type-chart-for-kids) starts with this circle, and [Type Clash](https://pokee.si/games/type-clash) turns it into a timed game.

## Letters: Unown

[Unown](https://pokee.si/pokemon/unown) is a Psychic Pokémon shaped like letters. It has 28 forms, one for each letter from A to Z, plus an exclamation mark and a question mark. In the games, all of them count as one Pokémon.

That makes Unown good for spelling games. Write your child's name in Unown letters, or hide letters around the room for them to find.

## Numbers: Shuckle

Every Pokémon has six base stats, and [Shuckle](https://pokee.si/pokemon/shuckle) has the strangest set. Its Defense and Special Defense are 230 each, while its Attack and Special Attack are 10 and its Speed is 5. Its HP is 20.

Some questions to try:

- Which stat is biggest, and which is smallest?
- How much bigger is 230 than 10?
- Add all six: 20 + 10 + 230 + 10 + 230 + 5. The answer, 505, is Shuckle's base stat total, shown on its page.

Older children can compare two Pokémon's totals, or play [Higher or Lower](https://pokee.si/games/higher-lower), where you guess which of two Pokémon has the bigger stat. [Base stats explained](https://pokee.si/articles/pokemon-base-stats-explained) has more numbers if they get hooked.

## Measuring: Wailord and Joltik

Size is a good way into metres and kilograms. All four of these are from our data.

| Pokémon | Height | Weight |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Joltik](https://pokee.si/pokemon/joltik) | 0.1 m | 0.6 kg |
| [Pikachu](https://pokee.si/pokemon/pikachu) | 0.4 m | 6 kg |
| [Snorlax](https://pokee.si/pokemon/snorlax) | 2.1 m | 460 kg |
| [Wailord](https://pokee.si/pokemon/wailord) | 14.5 m | 398 kg |

Wailord is 145 times as tall as Joltik. Snorlax is shorter than Wailord but weighs more. Children can measure themselves and find a Pokémon that's about their height. [Heaviest and lightest Pokémon](https://pokee.si/articles/heaviest-and-lightest-pokemon) has the extremes.

## Patience: Magikarp

[Magikarp](https://pokee.si/pokemon/magikarp) is famous for being useless. Its base stat total is just 200, and its main move, [Splash](https://pokee.si/moves/splash), does nothing at all. Keep training it, though, and at level 20 it evolves into [Gyarados](https://pokee.si/pokemon/gyarados). With a total of 540, Gyarados has the highest of any Water type from the first generation.

It's a story children remember: the weak one that gets strong because someone kept going. Counting up from its current level to 20 is good number practice too.

## Cause and effect: Eevee

[Eevee](https://pokee.si/pokemon/eevee) can evolve into 8 different Pokémon, and each one has a clear trigger. A Water Stone gives Vaporeon, a Thunder Stone gives Jolteon, levelling up with high friendship during the day gives Espeon, and at night it gives Umbreon. "If I do this, then that happens" is the whole lesson. [Eevee evolutions](https://pokee.si/articles/eevee-evolutions) lists all 8.

## Reading and sounds: Pikachu

Pokémon names are made-up words, which makes them good practice for sounding things out. [Pikachu](https://pokee.si/pokemon/pikachu) is a nice start. Bulbapedia says its Japanese name comes from "pikapika", the sound word for sparkling, and "chūchū", the sound of a mouse squeaking. Pikachu is also one of the names that stays the same in Japanese, French and German.

If you're not sure how to say a name, our [pronunciation guide](https://pokee.si/pronounce) has a respelling and a recording for every Pokémon. Pikachu is PEE-kuh-choo. [Say the Name](https://pokee.si/games/say-the-name) plays the name aloud and asks your child to find the Pokémon.

## Two more for older children

[Ditto](https://pokee.si/pokemon/ditto) has six stats of exactly 48. That's 6 × 48 = 288, its base stat total. It is a tidy multiplication question with an answer you can check.

[Sudowoodo](https://pokee.si/pokemon/sudowoodo) looks like a tree, but it's a Rock type. That means Water moves are super effective against it, which wouldn't be true if it really were a Grass-type tree. It's a fun way to talk about how something can look like one thing and be another.

## How we'd use this

Keep it short and let your child lead. Ten minutes on one Pokémon's page, reading its name, finding its biggest stat and guessing its type, will do more than an hour of drills. When they want more, the [lessons](https://pokee.si/lessons) and [quizzes](https://pokee.si/quizzes) on this site cover types, stats and evolution in small steps.

## Questions people ask

### Can Pokémon help children learn?

In our opinion it can help with practice, not replace teaching. Pokémon gives children a reason to read names, compare numbers and reason about types, which many find more fun than a worksheet.

### Which Pokémon is best for learning the alphabet?

Unown. It has 28 forms, one for each letter from A to Z plus an exclamation mark and a question mark.

### Which Pokémon is good for maths practice?

Shuckle is our favourite. Its six stats are very uneven (Defense 230, Attack 10), which makes adding, comparing and spotting the biggest number easy to see.

### What age is this for?

Most of the ideas suit children from about 5 to 10. Younger children can match types and sizes, and older ones can add up stats and work out type multipliers.

### Is this an official Pokémon list?

No. This page is our opinion as the team behind pokee.si. The numbers in it come from the Pokédex data, but the picks are ours.
