# Hard Pokémon Names for Parents: A Cheat Sheet by Spelling Pattern

Most hard Pokémon names follow a handful of spelling patterns: X said as Z, an -eon ending, a G that is hard or soft, a "ch" said as K, and a final e that you say out loud. Learn those five and you can read most of the names that trip adults up. Every one of the 1,025 names on pokee.si has a respelling and an audio clip.

This page is a cheat sheet sorted by pattern. For the names The Pokémon Company has corrected on camera, and the classic mix-ups, see [how to pronounce Pokémon names](https://pokee.si/articles/how-to-pronounce-pokemon-names). The tables here do not repeat that article.

## How to read our respellings

We write each name the way it sounds, split into syllables. Capital letters mark the stressed syllable, the one you say loudest. In **PEE-kuh-choo**, the "PEE" gets the push.

Stress is easy to get wrong. Of the 1,025 names, 298 do not put the stress on the first syllable, so leaning on the start of the name is wrong for those. Most names are short, though: 456 have two syllables and 419 have three. Only 124 have four and 10 have five.

Our respellings are our best reading of each name. Where the anime or an official segment says something different, the table notes it.

## X said as Z

An X at the start of a Pokémon name sounds like Z. Three names do this.

| Pokémon | Say it | Audio |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Xatu](https://pokee.si/pokemon/xatu) | **ZAH-too** | [Hear it](https://pokee.si/pokemon/xatu) |
| [Xerneas](https://pokee.si/pokemon/xerneas) | **ZUR-nee-ahs** | [Hear it](https://pokee.si/pokemon/xerneas) |
| [Xurkitree](https://pokee.si/pokemon/xurkitree) | **ZUR-kih-tree** | [Hear it](https://pokee.si/pokemon/xurkitree) |

[Uxie](https://pokee.si/pokemon/uxie) has its X in the middle, and it trips people up differently. The 2023 World Championships segment said it **YOOK-zee**.

## Names ending in -eon

The ending is said "ee-on" (or "ee-un" in Charmeleon). Fourteen names have it.

| Pokémon | Say it | Audio |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Charmeleon](https://pokee.si/pokemon/charmeleon) | **char-MEE-lee-un** | [Hear it](https://pokee.si/pokemon/charmeleon) |
| [Umbreon](https://pokee.si/pokemon/umbreon) | **UM-bree-on** | [Hear it](https://pokee.si/pokemon/umbreon) |
| [Empoleon](https://pokee.si/pokemon/empoleon) | **em-POH-lee-on** | [Hear it](https://pokee.si/pokemon/empoleon) |
| [Inteleon](https://pokee.si/pokemon/inteleon) | **in-TEL-ee-on** | [Hear it](https://pokee.si/pokemon/inteleon) |

The others include [Vaporeon](https://pokee.si/pokemon/vaporeon) (vay-POR-ee-on), [Jolteon](https://pokee.si/pokemon/jolteon) (JOHL-tee-on), [Flareon](https://pokee.si/pokemon/flareon) (FLAIR-ee-on), [Sylveon](https://pokee.si/pokemon/sylveon) (SIL-vee-on) and [Glaceon](https://pokee.si/pokemon/glaceon) (GLAY-see-on). Watch the stress: it moves around.

## Hard G and soft G

A G before i, e or y could go either way, and the names split. The note column says which.

| Pokémon | Say it | Note | Audio |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Geodude](https://pokee.si/pokemon/geodude) | **JEE-oh-dood** | Soft G, said like J. | [Hear it](https://pokee.si/pokemon/geodude) |
| [Genesect](https://pokee.si/pokemon/genesect) | **JEN-uh-sekt** | Soft G. | [Hear it](https://pokee.si/pokemon/genesect) |
| [Girafarig](https://pokee.si/pokemon/girafarig) | **jih-RAF-uh-rig** | A palindrome: it reads the same backwards. | [Hear it](https://pokee.si/pokemon/girafarig) |
| [Giratina](https://pokee.si/pokemon/giratina) | **geer-uh-TEE-nuh** | Hard G, as in "gear". | [Hear it](https://pokee.si/pokemon/giratina) |
| [Gible](https://pokee.si/pokemon/gible) | **GIB-ul** | Hard G, as in "gift". | [Hear it](https://pokee.si/pokemon/gible) |
| [Gyarados](https://pokee.si/pokemon/gyarados) | **GYAIR-uh-dohs** | The anime says this. A softer "GAIR-uh-dohs" is also heard. | [Hear it](https://pokee.si/pokemon/gyarados) |

Two more with a hard G are in the Paldea section below: [Tatsugiri](https://pokee.si/pokemon/tatsugiri) and [Farigiraf](https://pokee.si/pokemon/farigiraf).

## "Ch" said as K

In these names the "ch" is a K.

| Pokémon | Say it | Note | Audio |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Archen](https://pokee.si/pokemon/archen) | **AR-ken** | Not "ar-CHEN". This is on the official 2025 list. | [Hear it](https://pokee.si/pokemon/archen) |
| [Archeops](https://pokee.si/pokemon/archeops) | **AR-kee-ops** | | [Hear it](https://pokee.si/pokemon/archeops) |
| [Archaludon](https://pokee.si/pokemon/archaludon) | **ar-KAL-uh-don** | | [Hear it](https://pokee.si/pokemon/archaludon) |

[Arceus](https://pokee.si/pokemon/arceus) is a related case, with a C instead of "ch". The English anime and official trailers say **AR-kee-us**, with a hard C. "AR-see-us" is a very common reading that does not match.

## A final e that is said out loud

English readers expect a silent e. In these names it is spoken, usually as "ay" or "ee".

| Pokémon | Say it | Note | Audio |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Illumise](https://pokee.si/pokemon/illumise) | **ee-loo-MEE-zay** | Official: "EE-loom-MEE-zay" (2023 World Championships). Not "IL-oo-meez". | [Hear it](https://pokee.si/pokemon/illumise) |
| [Dragalge](https://pokee.si/pokemon/dragalge) | **druh-GAL-jee** | "Dragon" plus "algae". Official: "druh-GAL-jee" (2023 World Championships and 2026 Europe International Championships). | [Hear it](https://pokee.si/pokemon/dragalge) |
| [Lombre](https://pokee.si/pokemon/lombre) | **LOM-bray** | "LOM-ber" is also heard. | [Hear it](https://pokee.si/pokemon/lombre) |
| [Phione](https://pokee.si/pokemon/phione) | **fee-OH-nay** | | [Hear it](https://pokee.si/pokemon/phione) |

[Tapu Lele](https://pokee.si/pokemon/tapu-lele) belongs here too: **TAH-poo LEH-leh**.
