# Pokémon With the Most Evolutions: Eevee and Every Branching Family

[Eevee](https://pokee.si/pokemon/eevee) is the Pokémon with the most evolutions. It can evolve into 8 different Pokémon: Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Espeon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon and Sylveon. No other Pokémon comes close. The next highest are [Tyrogue](https://pokee.si/pokemon/tyrogue) and [Applin](https://pokee.si/pokemon/applin), with 3 choices each.

When one Pokémon can evolve into different ones, that is called a branched evolution. In our data, 19 families branch like this.

## Every branching family

These are all the families where one Pokémon can become two or more different species. "Branches" is the most choices at a single step, and "species" counts everyone in the family.

The methods come from our data, and a few only work in some games. Scyther can't evolve into Kleavor in Scarlet and Violet, for example, because there is no Black Augurite there. You have to move it to Legends: Arceus.

## Eevee: the record holder

Eevee has 8 evolutions, and no Pokémon has exactly 4, 5, 6 or 7. It didn't always have 8. Eevee started with 3 in Generation 1, had 5 after Gold and Silver added Espeon and Umbreon, 7 after Leafeon and Glaceon, and 8 after Sylveon arrived in X and Y. Guinness World Records lists it as the Pokémon with the most evolutions.

In Generation 1, Eevee was the only Pokémon with a branched evolution at all. How to get each one is in [Eevee evolutions](https://pokee.si/articles/eevee-evolutions).

## The three-way splits

[Tyrogue](https://pokee.si/pokemon/tyrogue) decides by its own stats. At level 20, it becomes [Hitmonlee](https://pokee.si/pokemon/hitmonlee) if its Attack is higher than its Defense, [Hitmonchan](https://pokee.si/pokemon/hitmonchan) if its Defense is higher, and [Hitmontop](https://pokee.si/pokemon/hitmontop) if they are equal. Bulbapedia calls Hitmonlee the one with the most extreme stats and Hitmontop the most balanced.

[Applin](https://pokee.si/pokemon/applin) decides by which apple you give it. A Tart Apple makes [Flapple](https://pokee.si/pokemon/flapple), a Sweet Apple makes [Appletun](https://pokee.si/pokemon/appletun), and a Syrupy Apple makes [Dipplin](https://pokee.si/pokemon/dipplin), which can evolve again into [Hydrapple](https://pokee.si/pokemon/hydrapple). Bulbapedia describes this shape, two short branches and one longer one, as unique.

## Branches you can't control

Some families branch by chance or by gender:

- [Wurmple](https://pokee.si/pokemon/wurmple) has a 50% chance of becoming Silcoon or Cascoon. You can't pick, because it depends on a hidden value the Pokémon is born with.
- [Burmy](https://pokee.si/pokemon/burmy) becomes Wormadam if it's female and Mothim if it's male.
- [Ralts](https://pokee.si/pokemon/ralts) and [Snorunt](https://pokee.si/pokemon/snorunt) have a branch for one gender only: a male Kirlia can become Gallade, and a female Snorunt can become Froslass.
- [Nincada](https://pokee.si/pokemon/nincada) gives you two Pokémon at once. It becomes Ninjask, and if you have a spare Poké Ball and an empty party slot, Shedinja appears too.

## The biggest families

Counting every species in a family, Eevee's is the biggest by a long way.

| Family | Species | Stages |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Eevee](https://pokee.si/pokemon/eevee) | 9 | 2 |
| [Wurmple](https://pokee.si/pokemon/wurmple) | 5 | 3 |
| [Applin](https://pokee.si/pokemon/applin) | 5 | 3 |
| [Oddish](https://pokee.si/pokemon/oddish) | 4 | 3 |
| [Poliwag](https://pokee.si/pokemon/poliwag) | 4 | 3 |
| [Tyrogue](https://pokee.si/pokemon/tyrogue) | 4 | 2 |
| [Ralts](https://pokee.si/pokemon/ralts) | 4 | 3 |
| [Cosmog](https://pokee.si/pokemon/cosmog) | 4 | 3 |

No family has more than three stages. In our data, 116 families have three stages, 224 have two, and 201 Pokémon have no evolutions at all. Those are in [Pokémon that don't evolve](https://pokee.si/articles/pokemon-that-dont-evolve).

## Branches that are only forms

Some Pokémon evolve into different forms of the same species. These don't count as branches above, because the result is still one Pokémon:

- [Rockruff](https://pokee.si/pokemon/rockruff) becomes one of three [Lycanroc](https://pokee.si/pokemon/lycanroc) forms, depending on whether it evolves in the day, at night or at dusk.
- [Toxel](https://pokee.si/pokemon/toxel) becomes one of two [Toxtricity](https://pokee.si/pokemon/toxtricity) forms, depending on its Nature.
- [Kubfu](https://pokee.si/pokemon/kubfu) becomes one of two [Urshifu](https://pokee.si/pokemon/urshifu) styles, depending on which tower scroll it reads.
- [Cubone](https://pokee.si/pokemon/cubone), [Exeggcute](https://pokee.si/pokemon/exeggcute) and [Pichu](https://pokee.si/pokemon/pichu)'s family can evolve into Alolan forms in Sun and Moon.
