# Terastallization

The crystal transformation of Scarlet and Violet: Tera Types, the STAB rules, Stellar and Tera Raids.

Terastallization is the Generation IX battle gimmick. A Trainer uses a Tera Orb, the Pokémon covers itself in a jewel-like crystal, and it changes into its Tera Type. It appears in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and the two expansions, and in Pokémon Champions.

## What happens

When a Pokémon Terastallizes, its type changes to its Tera Type, and the old types are removed for defence. A Fire-type Pokémon with a Water Tera Type takes damage as a pure Water type. A Tera Pokémon is shown with a floating crystal crown above its head and a glittering, faceted body.

It happens at the start of a turn, before any move, and lasts until the battle ends or the Pokémon faints. After one use, the Tera Orb has to be recharged at a Pokémon Center or by touching crystal. In Area Zero it recharges itself after every battle, and after you catch Terapagos in The Indigo Disk, your Orb never needs charging.

## Offence and the 60-power rule

A Terastallized Pokémon keeps the same-type attack bonus on its original types and also gets it on its Tera Type. If the Tera Type matches one of its original types, the bonus for that type rises from 1.5x to 2x. Adaptability makes the bonus even bigger (2.25x for a matching Tera Type).

Moves of the Tera Type that have a base power below 60 are raised to 60. This does not apply to multi-hit moves or priority moves. Tera Blast changes into the Pokémon's Tera Type when it Terastallizes.

## Getting a Tera Type

Every Pokémon has a Tera Type, and wild Pokémon normally have one that matches their own type (so a Charcadet always has a Fire Tera Type). The Tera Type is not inherited by breeding. Special wild Tera Pokémon and Tera Raid Battles often have different Tera Types. After beating the Medali Gym, you can change a Pokémon's Tera Type by giving 50 Tera Shards of the right type to the chef at the Treasure Eatery. Ogerpon and Terapagos cannot change their Tera Type.

## The Stellar type

Stellar is a 19th Tera Type, added with The Indigo Disk expansion, which reveals that Terapagos created it. A Stellar Pokémon keeps the defences of its original type (and, like other Tera Pokémon, is weak to Stellar moves). Offensively, each of its move types gets a one-time boost the first time it is used: 2x for the Pokémon's original types and 1.2x for every other type. Terapagos has its own Stellar Form with its Ability Teraform Zero, which switches off all weather and terrain.

## Wild Tera Pokémon and Tera Raids

Wild Tera Pokémon glow and Terastallize the moment a battle starts. You must wear them down: when an attack drops one to 20% HP, the Tera Jewel breaks, the Pokémon skips its turn and you can catch it. Tera Raid Battles let up to four players team up against a powerful Tera boss. Paldea has 68 wild Tera Pokémon in fixed locations, Kitakami has 22 and the Blueberry Academy Terarium has 21.

## Where the energy comes from

In the lore, Terastal energy leaks out of the Great Crater in Paldea, where Terapagos is said to be sleeping in the Area Zero Underdepths. It also appears in Kitakami's Crystal Pool and in the Terarium at Blueberry Academy, which Briar built using Paldean soil and Kitakami water. The name Terastal probably blends the Japanese terasu ("to shine") with "crystal", though that is a fan reading.
