# Aegislash

Royal Sword Pokémon · Steel/Ghost-type

![Aegislash official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/681.webp)

Aegislash is a [Steel](https://pokee.si/types/steel)/[Ghost](https://pokee.si/types/ghost)-type Pokémon, the Royal Sword Pokémon, number 681 (#0681) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the [Kalos](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kalos) region. It is 1.7 m tall and weighs 53 kg.

Aegislash is the Royal Sword Pokémon, a spectral blade and shield that, the Pokédex says, once bent people and Pokémon to its will and had them raise a kingdom to its taste. Legend says whoever it recognises as a leader is destined to become king.

## How to pronounce Aegislash

Aegislash is pronounced **EE-jih-slash**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Listen to Aegislash said out loud:

In Japanese it is ギルガルド (Gillgard).

## Lore

### Biology

Aegislash is a golden sword 1.7 m tall and weighing 53 kg, with a purple eye where the blade meets the hilt and two black, cloth-like arms that fade to pale purple at the tips. At least one arm is always holding an ornate gold shield. In Shield Forme the shield covers the blade, and in Blade Forme the blade is bared.

### Behaviour

Aegislash can apparently sense leadership in others, and the Pokédex says kings of many generations kept these Pokémon at their side, while the Pokémon steered the people and Pokémon around them with spectral power. The Shield Pokédex adds a darker tale: one king's Aegislash slowly drained his life, and his kingdom collapsed along with him.

### Habitat

The Pokédex names no habitat. Aegislash is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet, but in Legends: Z-A it appears in Wild Zone 20 of Centrico Plaza.

### Powers

Its Ability, Stance Change, swaps its form. It starts battles in Shield Forme (140 base Defense and Special Defense) and switches to Blade Forme (140 Attack and Special Attack) when it uses a damaging move, returning to Shield Forme with King's Shield, a move only Aegislash is known to learn. Legends: Z-A has no Abilities, yet it still changes the same way. It also learns Shadow Sneak, Sacred Sword and Flash Cannon.

### Name origin

Aegislash may combine 'aegis', the shield of Zeus in Greek mythology, and 'slash'. The Japanese name is Gillgard (ギルガルド), which may blend Gilgamesh or 'gild', kiru ('to slay with a blade') or 'kill', and 'guard'.

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia credits Hitoshi Ariga with the design. Aegislash appears to be a possessed sword and shield, and its habit of picking kings suggests the legendary swords of Europe such as Durendal and Excalibur. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Aegislash evolves from Doublade when a Dusk Stone is used and is the final form of the Honedge line.

### In the games

Aegislash joined Pokkén Tournament DX as a DLC fighter and is a playable melee all-rounder in Pokémon UNITE, and an Aegislash in Super Mystery Dungeon's Noe Town is named Gilbrand. It first appeared in X and Y, and in Legends: Z-A's Mega Dimension DLC it is found in the Steel zones of Hyperspace Lumiose.

### In the anime

Argus Steel's Aegislash, his main Pokémon, debuted in the film 'Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction' and often carries him. Sawyer's Aegislash, evolved from his Doublade, appears in 'Valuable Experience for All!' against Tierno and Ash.

### Fun facts

- Aegislash was the first Pokémon ever to have its base stat total cut, when Generation VIII trimmed its key stats from 150 to 140, and no other Pokémon had been cut before Scarlet and Violet.
- Aegislash is the only non-Legendary, non-Mythical Pokémon whose forms are spelled 'Forme' instead of 'Form'.
- The 2023 Pokémon World Championships livestreams gave its pronunciation as 'EE-jih-SLASH'.
- Bulbapedia says Shield Forme Aegislash is shown on the utility holes of Lumiose City's Magenta District, where it represents grace.
