# Aggron

Iron Armor Pokémon · Steel/Rock-type

![Aggron official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/306.webp)

Aggron is a [Steel](https://pokee.si/types/steel)/[Rock](https://pokee.si/types/rock)-type Pokémon, the Iron Armor Pokémon, number 306 (#0306) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 2.1 m tall and weighs 360 kg.

Aggron is the Iron Armor Pokémon, a mountain-sized bully with a gentle streak: it claims a whole mountain as its territory and thrashes trespassers, yet after a landslide or fire the Pokédex says it hauls in topsoil and replants the trees. In its Mega form the iron inside it becomes steel armour covering its whole body.

## How to pronounce Aggron

Aggron is pronounced **AG-ron**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Listen to Aggron said out loud:

[Listen](https://pokee.si/audio/names/306.mp3)

In Japanese it is ボスゴドラ (Bossgodora).

## Lore

### Biology

Aggron is 2.1 m tall and 360 kg, a huge biped with a grey exoskeleton under silver armour plates. Horns poke out of holes in its head armour, and wide blunt spikes sit on its shoulders. Its horns grow a little longer over time, so the Pokédex says they show its age.

### Behaviour

Aggron treats its mountain as a kingdom. The Pokédex says it patrols constantly and thrashes anything that breaks into its territory. It wears the gouges in its armour as mementos of past fights, so a heavily scarred Aggron is a veteran to be treated with respect.

### Habitat

The Pokédex gives mountains, and says it claims a whole mountain as its own. It is not in Scarlet and Violet. In Legends: Z-A it lives in Wild Zone 20 in Centrico Plaza and in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

### Diet

It digs tunnels through bedrock with its horns in search of iron to eat.

### Powers

Aggron has Sturdy or Rock Head, with Heavy Metal hidden. Heavy Slam, Iron Head and Rock Slide are its main attacks, and Iron Defense makes it harder to break. Mega Aggron, using Aggronite, drops its Rock typing and gains Filter, which cuts damage from super effective moves by a quarter; its horns are said to destroy steel tanks. Base Defense 180 and Attack 110 make it a bulky bruiser.

### Name origin

Aggron may combine 'aggressive' or 'aggregate' with 'iron'. The Japanese name is Bossgodora (ボスゴドラ), which may blend 'boss', kōdō ('mining tunnel') and Kodora, the name of Lairon.

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia suggests Aggron may draw on the Pulgasari (also spelled Bulgasari), a Korean legend about an iron-eating monster, as well as Triceratops, theropod dinosaurs and perhaps the kaiju film genre. Its head resembles a knight's or gladiator's helmet, and Mega Aggron's head plate looks like Lairon's in reverse. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Aggron evolves from Lairon at level 42 and ends the line.

### In the games

Champion Steven Stone keeps an Aggron on his team of six in Ruby and Sapphire, the games where it first appeared, as he does again in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Mega Aggron arrived in Generation VI, and in Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky an Aggron guards Boulder Quarry as its boss.

### In the anime

Aggron debuted in 'A Hole Lotta Trouble' as Steven Stone's Pokémon, and in 'Battling as Hard as Stone!' it beat Ash's Dracovish before Gengar defeated it. Paul's Aggron fought Ash's Pikachu in 'Familiarity Breeds Strategy!' until Infernape's Mach Punch ended the battle.

### Fun facts

- Mega Aggron's base Defense of 230 ties Mega Steelix among Steel types and Shuckle among obtainable Pokémon, and Bulbapedia says its 150-point gap between Defense and Special Defense (80) is the largest of any Pokémon.
- Bulbapedia notes that only two dual types lose a type on Mega Evolving: Aggron and Garchomp, the latter in its Mega Garchomp Z form.
- In Ken Sugimori's original Ruby and Sapphire artwork its back plate was black instead of white, which was later corrected.
- In Generation III, Aggron is both the tallest and the heaviest Rock type.
