# Appletun

Apple Nectar Pokémon · Grass/Dragon-type

![Appletun official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/842.webp)

Appletun is a [Grass](https://pokee.si/types/grass)/[Dragon](https://pokee.si/types/dragon)-type Pokémon, the Apple Nectar Pokémon, number 842 (#0842) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 8 and comes from the [Galar](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/galar) region. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 13 kg.

Appletun is the Apple Nectar Pokémon, a Grass and Dragon type whose back, shaped a little like an apple pie, is caked in sweet nectar. The scent lures in Bug Pokémon for it to eat, and it spits sticky nectar at Pokémon that try to lick it.

## How to pronounce Appletun

Appletun is pronounced **AP-ul-tun**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Appletun is a stout, dragon-like Pokémon, 0.4 m tall and 13 kg. It is mostly green, but its belly and lower jaw are yellow, and an orange mark on its chest looks like an apple core. A piece of apple sits on its head like a helmet, and its leafy eyestalks usually hang down like ears. The big hump on its back has overlapping stripes like pie crust, with two red and green leaves on top. The Shield Pokédex calls the skin on its back a particular treat that children used to snack on.

### Behaviour

Appletun's nectar does double duty. Its scent draws in small Bug Pokémon, which it preys on, but the Violet Pokédex says that when Lechonk come to lick the nectar off its back, it squirts sticky nectar to chase them off.

### Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat; Serebii lists Grass and Forest biomes in Kitakami, where it appears at Mossfell Confluence in The Teal Mask. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### Diet

Mainly sweet apples, plus small Bug Pokémon attracted by its nectar, according to the Pokédex.

### Powers

Appletun's signature move is Apple Acid, learnt at level 28 and, Bulbapedia says, known to no other Pokémon. Its Abilities are Ripen and Gluttony, with Thick Fat hidden. Gigantamax Appletun's nectar thickens so it can soak up more damage, and it blasts opponents with sticky deluges using its exclusive G-Max Sweetness. Base HP 110 and Speed 30 make it bulky and slow.

### Name origin

Appletun may combine 'apple', 'Appleton' (a place where apples grow), 'ton' for its bulk and 'turnover'. The Japanese name Tarupple (タルップル) may blend 'tart', tarui ('sluggish') and 'apple'.

### Design inspiration

Appletun appears to be based on the image of a worm in an apple, with a pun on 'wyrm', but its tortoise-like build and pie-crust back point to desserts such as apple pie or apple turnover. Bulbapedia also suggests the tale of Bel and the Dragon, in which a dragon bursts open after eating a cake. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Applin becomes Appletun when it is given a Sweet Apple, and Appletun does not evolve further.

### In the games

Wild Appletun, including ones with the Gigantamax Factor, appear only in Shield's Max Raid Battles according to Bulbapedia's table, in Sword and Shield, where it debuted. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in 5-star Tera Raid Battles, or by evolving Applin.

### In the anime

Appletun debuted in 'Errand Endurance!', where Jessie pulled one out of the Rocket Prize Master. In 'The Bittersweet Truth', a Trainer named Mitchell used one against Murdock and Liko in a Double Battle.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia points out that although a Sweet Apple evolves Applin into Appletun, its move Apple Acid specifies tart apples.
- Bulbapedia says Gigantamax Appletun is the one Gigantamax form with no Pokémon VMAX card in the Trading Card Game.
- In Pokémon Adventures it belongs to Milo, first appearing in 'Rumble!! The Horrific Darkest Day'.
