Applin is a [Grass](https://pokee.si/types/grass)/[Dragon](https://pokee.si/types/dragon)-type Pokémon, the Apple Core Pokémon, number 840 (#0840) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 8 and comes from the [Galar](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/galar) region. It is 0.2 m tall and weighs 0.5 kg.

Applin is the Apple Core Pokémon, a tiny Grass and Dragon type that lives inside an apple and passes itself off as fruit to fool hungry birds. The kind of apple it lives in decides what it evolves into.

## How to pronounce Applin

Applin is pronounced **AP-lin**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Applin is a small, light green worm, 0.2 m tall and 0.5 kg, with leaf-like eyestalks that make its apple look as if it has a stem. It is the lightest and shortest Dragon type. A newly born Applin digs into an apple, which is its home, its food and its shelter; the Pokédex says its body fluid strengthens the apple's skin and stops it rotting, and that an Applin separated from its apple loses moisture and grows weak.

### Behaviour

Applin avoids bird Pokémon, its natural enemies, by passing itself off as a plain apple. Bulbapedia says Noibat sometimes mistake it for food, and that Galar has a custom of giving an Applin as a romantic gesture.

### Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat beyond the inside of an apple. In Scarlet and Violet it turns up across Paldea and in Kitakami's Apple Hills; it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### Diet

It eats the flesh of the apple it lives in, according to the Scarlet Pokédex.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Ripen, which doubles the effect of Berries, and Gluttony, with Bulletproof hidden. Bulbapedia notes that only Applin, Flapple and Appletun can have Ripen. Base Defense 80 suits a hider.

### Name origin

Applin may combine 'apple' and 'in'. The Japanese name Kajicchu (カジッチュ) may blend kajiru ('to gnaw'), kajitsu ('fruit') and chū ('bug' or 'worm').

### Design inspiration

Applin appears to draw on the common picture of a worm tunnelling into an apple, perhaps the larvae of moths such as the codling moth, which feed on apple cores. Its Dragon type may pun on 'wyrm'. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Applin evolves by item: a Tart Apple makes Flapple, a Sweet Apple makes Appletun, and a Syrupy Apple makes Dipplin, which becomes Hydrapple by levelling up knowing Dragon Cheer.

### In the games

Applin lives on Route 5 and in the Wild Area in Sword and Shield, where it first appeared. In Scarlet and Violet it is found across Paldea and appears in Tera Raid Battles, including Kitakami ones.

### In the anime

In Detective Pikachu & the Mystery of the Missing Flan, the culprit turns out to be an Applin that Tim Goodman picked up by mistake for an apple, and it ate his flan. In the series proper it debuted in a flashback in 'A One-Stick Wonder!', where Goh tried to catch one.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia notes that Applin and its evolutions are the sole Pokémon that share the Grass and Dragon Egg Groups.
- Applin's whole line reaches level 100 on only 600,000 experience points, which Bulbapedia says is the lowest total among Generation VIII Pokémon.
- Bulbapedia says Applin and Mime Jr. are the only two Pokémon whose branching lines have a different number of stages on each branch.
