![Arceus official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/493.webp)

Arceus is a [Normal](https://pokee.si/types/normal)-type Pokémon, the Alpha Pokémon, number 493 (#0493) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 4 and comes from the [Sinnoh](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/sinnoh) region. It is 3.2 m tall and weighs 320 kg.

Arceus is the Alpha Pokémon, the Mythical creator of the Pokémon universe. Sinnoh myth says it hatched from an egg in a place where nothing existed and shaped the world with 1,000 arms.

## How to pronounce Arceus

Arceus is pronounced **AR-kee-us**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Arceus is a white, horse-like Pokémon, 3.2 m tall and 320 kg, with a gold, cross-like wheel around its round abdomen set with four green jewels, gold hooves and a grey striped underside. Bulbapedia likens its shape to a qilin or a centaur. The Legends: Arceus Pokédex calls it the source of the light that shines over Hisui, guiding and protecting every Pokémon.

### Behaviour

In Sinnoh myth, Bulbapedia says, Arceus made the eggs that Dialga, Palkia, Giratina and the lake guardians hatched from, and banished Giratina for its violent nature. In the film 'Arceus and the Jewel of Life' it protects the world and rewards kindness, but it holds grudges and rampages when betrayed. Today, Bulbapedia says, it prefers to give hints rather than step in.

### Habitat

Bulbapedia places Arceus in a separate dimension outside time and space. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives through Pokémon HOME, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Its Ability Multitype changes its type and form to match a held Plate or type-specific Z-Crystal, giving it 18 forms; Fairy joined in Generation VI. Its signature move Judgment changes type with its Plate, and in Legends: Arceus the Legend Plate lets it switch form mid-battle to gain a type advantage. With 120 in every base stat, its total of 720 tops the base-form total of every other Pokémon.

### Name origin

Arceus may combine the Ancient Greek arkhē ('origin' or 'dominion') with Zeus, and could also play on alpha, arcane, aureus ('golden') and arc. The Japanese name is アルセウス (Aruseusu), which the games write Arceus in Latin letters.

### Design inspiration

Takao Unno designed Arceus. Bulbapedia reads it as a creator deity: its myths and rounded torso evoke a world egg, and its look and temples echo Classical Greece. It may also draw on hoofed animals and beasts like the qilin and centaur, and the 1,000 arms could allude to the many-armed Avalokiteśvara or the hundred-handed Hecatoncheires of Greek myth. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Arceus is the title character of Legends: Arceus, which sends the player back in time to Hisui to seek out the region's Pokémon. It first appeared in Diamond and Pearl as an event-only Pokémon, and Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have a Hall of Origin event that needs Legends: Arceus save data.

### In the anime

Arceus debuted in the film 'Arceus and the Jewel of Life', furious at Michina Town and trying to end the world until Ash and his friends changed the past. In the series it first appears as a silhouette in 'Showdown at the Gates of Warp!', called on to stop Dialga and Palkia fighting.

### Fun facts

- The English dub says Arceus with a hard c because, according to then voice director Tom Wayland, a soft c raised worries about a rude word in British English.
- Reaching Arceus in Diamond and Pearl needs the Azure Flute, an event item that never officially reached players in Generation IV.
- Arceus is the lone Pokémon to have narrated the opening of a core series game, Bulbapedia notes.
- Nintendo did not officially acknowledge Arceus until 14 February 2009, the year of its debut film, and revealed it to international audiences on 3 August 2009.
- Flying-type Arceus was the first pure Flying-type Pokémon, though Tornadus was the first with that typing in its default form.
