Articuno is a [Ice](https://pokee.si/types/ice)/[Flying](https://pokee.si/types/flying)-type Pokémon, the Freeze Pokémon, number 144 (#0144) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the [Kanto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kanto) region. It is 1.7 m tall and weighs 55.4 kg.

Articuno is the Freeze Pokémon, the ice member of Kanto's three legendary birds, said to appear to people lost in icy mountains. The Pokédex says its wings cool the air as it flies, so that snow falls in its wake.

## Lore

### Biology

Articuno is 1.7 m tall and 55.4 kg. Bulbapedia describes a large bird with sky-blue plumage, a crest of three darker blue feathers, a puff of white down on its chest and a streamer-like tail longer than its body. The Pokédex says its beautiful wings look translucent and legend says they are made of ice.

### Behaviour

Bulbapedia says Articuno flies from one icy mountain to the next. In the anime it can guide travellers to safety, as in 'Freeze Frame', yet it is fiercely territorial, immediately seizing the homes of Moltres and Zapdos in 'The Power of One'.

### Habitat

The Pokédex says it lives in snowy mountains riddled with permafrost, and its habitat category is Rare.

### Powers

Articuno controls ice at will, and has the Ability Pressure, with Snow Cloak hidden. It learns Powder Snow, Ice Shard, Freeze-Dry, Ice Beam and Blizzard, plus Hurricane for the wind and the one-hit Sheer Cold. Its base Special Defense of 125 is the highest of any Generation I Pokémon. Galarian Articuno, from The Crown Tundra, is a Psychic and Flying type with the Ability Competitive. It floats on psychic power, slices iron with the blades on its wings, and its Freezing Glare, a move only it can learn, leaves opponents stuck as if frozen.

### Name origin

Articuno blends 'arctic' with the Spanish uno ('one'), as the first of the three birds. The Japanese name is Freezer (フリーザー), literally 'freezer'.

### Design inspiration

Articuno seems to draw on legendary birds including the Persian Simurgh, the Huma, the Roc and the Chinese Fenghuang, many of them said to live on high peaks and bring good fortune, which may suit its rescue stories. The three birds also appear to stand for the seasons, with Articuno as winter, Zapdos as summer and Moltres as spring. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Articuno is a one-off catch on the Seafoam Islands, a legendary bird players have chased since Generation I, and Pyramid King Brandon uses one in Emerald. In Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team it guards Frosty Forest. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives by trade or Pokémon HOME, and The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero lets you find it on Glaseado Mountain after a Snack from Snacksworth. It is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Articuno debuted in the film 'The Power of One', where the collector Lawrence III hunts the three birds, and its TV series debut in 'Moving Pictures' is a distant flyby. Frontier Brain Noland is revealed to have befriended an Articuno in 'Numero Uno Articuno' and 'The Symbol Life', where it faces Ash's Charizard.

### Fun facts

- Three Australian beetle species described in 2020, Binburrum articuno, Binburrum zapdos and Binburrum moltres, were named after the birds to reflect their rarity.
- In Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen, binoculars at the Fuchsia City gate show Articuno flying towards the sea, even after you have caught it.
- In the manga Magical Pokémon Journey, Articuno is rumoured to spirit lost travellers away, but really runs a snow-cone shop at a ski resort.
- Articuno is the only one of the three birds you cannot meet without entering an event password, in Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness.
