# Azurill

Polka Dot Pokémon · Normal/Fairy-type

![Azurill official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/298.webp)

Azurill is a [Normal](https://pokee.si/types/normal)/[Fairy](https://pokee.si/types/fairy)-type Pokémon, the Polka Dot Pokémon, number 298 (#0298) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 0.2 m tall and weighs 2 kg.

Azurill is the Polka Dot Pokémon, a baby whose bouncy tail ball is as big as its body. It uses the ball as a trampoline, a float and a weapon, and the Pokédex says it can even throw itself by spinning the tail like a lasso.

## How to pronounce Azurill

Azurill is pronounced **uh-ZOO-ril**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Azurill is a round blue mouse, 0.2 m tall and 2 kg, with pink-lined circular ears, two white dots on its cheeks, black eyes and no visible arms. Its thin zigzag tail ends in a ball about as big as its body, bouncy like rubber and full of the nutrition it needs to grow. In water the ball is a float.

### Behaviour

Azurill is normally docile, but an angry one swings the ball to smash opponents bigger than itself. The Pokédex says it spins its tail like a lasso and throws it, and the throw carries the body too: one Azurill flung itself a record 10 m (33 ft). On sunny days Azurill gather at the water's edge to splash about.

### Habitat

The Pokédex lists the water's edge. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's South and East Provinces, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Azurill has the family's Abilities: Thick Fat, Huge Power and the hidden Sap Sipper. It knows Tail Whip, Water Gun and Splash, then learns Helping Hand, Bubble Beam, Charm and Bounce. Its stats are tiny: a base total of 190, with 20 Attack.

### Name origin

Azurill may combine 'azure' or azul ('blue' in Spanish and Portuguese) with 'rill', a small stream. The Japanese name is Ruriri (ルリリ), which may come from ruri, the deep-blue stone lapis lazuli.

### Design inspiration

Azurill appears to be a mouse mixed with a beach ball or lifebuoy. Bulbapedia says its nutrient-filled tail may come from the fat-tailed dunnart, a marsupial that stores fat in its tail, and that being Normal rather than Water may hint that a baby cannot yet swim. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Azurill evolves into Marill with high friendship; Bulbapedia says it is the only Pokémon that evolves by friendship into a form that then evolves by level.

### In the games

Azurill is a Treasure Town resident in Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, kidnapped by Drowzee and rescued by the player's team. It also appears in Scarlet and Violet's 1-star Tera Raid Battles, and first appeared in Ruby and Sapphire.

### In the anime

Misty is revealed to own an Azurill in 'The Scheme Team'. Azurill's series debut was in 'A Ruin with a View', where May failed to catch one.

### Fun facts

- Before Generation VI, one in three female Azurill evolved into a male Marill, because Azurill is 75% female and its evolutions 50%; Bulbapedia says no other Pokémon did this.
- Azurill was shown to the public on 7 March 2001, in the earliest announcements of Generation III.
- Polka dots are called mizutama, 'water balls', in Japan, which Bulbapedia suggests may explain its category.
