![Banette official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/354.webp)

Banette is a [Ghost](https://pokee.si/types/ghost)-type Pokémon, the Marionette Pokémon, number 354 (#0354) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 1.1 m tall and weighs 12.5 kg.

Banette is the Marionette Pokémon, a discarded doll that came to life out of a grudge and, the Pokédex says, still searches for the child who threw it away. Its cursed energy stays locked in only while its mouth stays zipped.

## How to pronounce Banette

Banette is pronounced **buh-NET**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Banette is a dark grey, doll-like Pokémon, 1.1 m tall and 12.5 kg. Its head carries three short spikes, a long zigzag ribbon trails behind it, and its eyes are a purplish pink with slit pupils. A zipper forms its mouth, its arms are long and flat, and it has a yellow, brush-like tail.

### Behaviour

Banette is found in garbage dumps and dark alleys, wandering in search of the child who discarded it. The Pokédex notes that some say treating it well will satisfy its grudge and change it back into a plush toy. It sleeps happily: the Sleep Style Dex shows it laughing, which Bulbapedia says may mean it is remembering when it was loved.

### Habitat

The Pokédex lists an urban habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's South Province at Alfornada Cavern and in the North Province at Glaseado Mountain.

### Powers

The Pokédex says Banette builds up its curse energy by pushing pins into itself. Its Abilities are Insomnia and Frisk, with Cursed Body hidden, and it learns Knock Off, Will-O-Wisp, Shadow Ball, Curse, Sucker Punch and Phantom Force. Its base Attack of 115 makes it a strong physical Ghost. Banettite lets it Mega Evolve into Mega Banette, which gains extra zippers, the Ability Prankster and the power to make up to three copies of itself, and the Legends: Z-A Pokédex says its cursing power spills out of the zipper.

### Name origin

Banette may combine 'bane', meaning a cause of harm, with 'marionette'. The Japanese name is Juppeta (ジュペッタ), which may blend ju, 'curse', with 'puppet', and may nod to Geppetto, the woodcarver in Pinocchio.

### Design inspiration

Banette looks like a haunted doll, and its story of a toy gaining life resembles the tsukumogami of Japanese folklore, objects that gain a spirit. Bulbapedia adds that the pins recall a voodoo doll, the dangling arms are a yurei ghost trope, and the horn resembles a headband sometimes worn by yurei.

### Evolution notes

Banette evolves from Shuppet at level 37 and does not evolve further.

### In the games

In Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky Banette is a local bully who befriends the young Igglybuff in a special episode, and it debuted in Ruby and Sapphire. In Legends: Z-A it appears in Jaune District's Wild Zone 15, as an Alpha Pokémon, and in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

### In the anime

Banette debuted in 'Deceit and Assist', where Harley used it against May at the Hoenn Grand Festival. In 'Getting to the Heart of it All!', a Banette called Bay-Bay was looking for the girl who played with it as a substitute doll, and found her grown up as Nurse Joy.

### Fun facts

- Mega Banette's base Attack of 165 is the highest of any Ghost Pokémon, according to Bulbapedia.
- Banette unzips its mouth to smile or eat in its Pokémon-Amie animation, despite its zipper needing to stay shut.
- In Generation III, only Sapphire and Emerald have wild Banette, at Sky Pillar; Ruby players can get one only by evolving Shuppet.
