# Baxcalibur

Ice Dragon Pokémon · Dragon/Ice-type

![Baxcalibur official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/998.webp)

Baxcalibur is a [Dragon](https://pokee.si/types/dragon)/[Ice](https://pokee.si/types/ice)-type Pokémon, the Ice Dragon Pokémon, number 998 (#0998) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the [Paldea](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/paldea) region. It is 2.1 m tall and weighs 210 kg.

Baxcalibur is a Dragon and Ice pseudo-legendary that breathes air so cold it freezes molten lava and finishes off enemies with the axe-like blade on its back. In the Mega Dimension DLC that blade grows into a giant sword.

## How to pronounce Baxcalibur

Baxcalibur is pronounced **baks-KAL-ih-ber**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Baxcalibur is 2.1 m tall and 210 kg, a large navy blue theropod-like Pokémon with hexagonal ice patches on its chest, knees and underside, long muscular arms and three red quills at each wrist. An icy mask covers its face, with ice spikes on the snout and icicles on the chin, leaving only its yellow eyes bare. A black sail coated in ice rises from its back like an axe blade or polearm head. The Scarlet Pokédex says the air it blasts from its mouth can freeze molten lava in an instant.

### Behaviour

Bulbapedia says Baxcalibur flips upside down in battle, standing on its head and front limbs, and blasts icy breath to launch itself sail-first at its opponent. The Violet Pokédex says it ends fights with a strike from its dorsal blade, and the Legends: Z-A entry says it freezes foes with its breath and then smashes them with its tail.

### Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat, and Scarlet and Violet have no wild Baxcalibur: you evolve an Arctibax or beat a 5-star or 6-star Tera Raid.

### Powers

Like the rest of its line it has Thermal Exchange, with Ice Body as the hidden Ability. No other known Pokémon can learn Glaive Rush, a reckless Dragon-type charge that Baxcalibur gets on evolving, and it also uses Icicle Crash and Earthquake. Mega Baxcalibur, made with Baxcalibrite in the Mega Dimension DLC, fuses its sail with an icy growth on its stomach that looks like a sword hilt, and the Legends: Z-A Pokédex says it fires beams from that hilt. With 145 Attack and 115 HP it hits hard and takes hits.

### Name origin

Baxcalibur may combine back and Excalibur, the legendary sword of King Arthur. The Japanese name is Seglaive (セグレイブ), possibly from se ('back') and glaive, a kind of polearm.

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Baxcalibur may draw on kaiju, whose suit actors stand upright as it does, and on theropod dinosaurs from old paleoart. Its diamond-shaped sail may recall stegosaur plates and, given Glaive Rush, a glaive's blade. No designer is credited, and these are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Baxcalibur evolves from Arctibax at level 54.

### In the games

Baxcalibur is the last Pokémon on the team of Elite Four member Hassel, a Dragon-type specialist who Terastallizes it at the first opportunity, and Scarlet and Violet is where it first appeared. In Legends: Z-A it turns up in the wild only in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

### In the anime

Baxcalibur debuted in 'Showdown! The Paldea Elite Four' as Hassel's Pokémon and, with his Flapple, beat Roy and Brassius. One also faces Nemona's Pawmot in the music video 'Biri-Biri'.

### Fun facts

- Mega Baxcalibur has 175 Attack, the highest of any Ice-type Pokémon, and its base stat total of 700 ties Black Kyurem and White Kyurem for the highest of any Ice type.
- Bulbapedia notes that the hilt on Mega Baxcalibur's stomach seems to resemble the symbol for Terastallization.
- Bulbapedia says its evolution level of 54 could reference 1954, the year the first film of a famous kaiju series came out.
