![Binacle official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/688.webp)

Binacle is a [Rock](https://pokee.si/types/rock)/[Water](https://pokee.si/types/water)-type Pokémon, the Two-Handed Pokémon, number 688 (#0688) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the [Kalos](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kalos) region. It is 0.5 m tall and weighs 31 kg.

Binacle, the Two-Handed Pokémon, is a Rock and Water type that never lives alone: two share a single rock and have to work together to survive. When they squabble, one packs up and moves to another rock.

## Lore

### Biology

Binacle resembles a goose barnacle, and also a hand on an arm, with the 'hand' serving as its head. It is 0.5 m tall and 31 kg, with a brown head, puffy orange cheeks and three long claws on top, and an orange body with a white stripe round its middle. The pair lives on one grey rock and moves by stretching and contracting, yanking the rock along in bold hops.

### Behaviour

A Binacle pair shares a rock of the right size, and the Pokédex says they cooperate to gather food at high tide. If they fight, one moves to a different rock. The Pokédex warns that if the two do not work well together, both their offence and defence fall apart.

### Habitat

The Pokédex puts it on rocks along the shore. In Legends: Z-A it is found in Wild Zones 2, 5 and 6, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds Hyperspace Lumiose. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet.

### Diet

Its food is seaweed that the tide leaves on the shore.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Tough Claws, which strengthens contact moves, Sniper, which makes critical hits do triple damage, and the hidden Pickpocket, which steals the item of anything that hits it. It fights with Razor Shell and Cross Chop; Hone Claws sharpens its attack and Shell Smash trades defence for a burst of offence.

### Name origin

Binacle may combine the prefix bi- (two) with barnacle and knuckle, and possibly binnacle, the housing for a ship's compass. The Japanese name is Kametete (カメテテ), possibly from kame-no-te, the Japanese word for goose barnacle, with French tête (head) and Japanese te (hand) mixed in.

### Design inspiration

Binacle looks modelled on the goose barnacle, which clings to rocks on a stalk. A pair surviving together may reference symbiosis, and the eyes in its palm-like faces may nod to the hamsa, a hand-shaped charm. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Binacle evolves into Barbaracle at level 39.

### In the games

In X and Y, its first games, Binacle is found on Routes 8 and 12 and in Ambrette Town. It returned in Sword and Shield and Legends: Z-A, but never made it into Scarlet and Violet.

### In the anime

A Binacle's two bodies have two owners in 'Unlocking Some Respect!': Locke's half is nicknamed Lefty, while the other half, Righty, belongs to his mentor Ed. Goh also caught one while in Kalos, as shown in 'A Festival Reunion!'.
