Bash Buffalo Pokémon · Normal-type

![Bouffalant official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/626.webp)

Bouffalant is a [Normal](https://pokee.si/types/normal)-type Pokémon, the Bash Buffalo Pokémon, number 626 (#0626) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the [Unova](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/unova) region. It is 1.6 m tall and weighs 94.6 kg.

Bouffalant is the Bash Buffalo Pokémon, a bison whose huge afro absorbs the damage from its own headbutts. The Pokédex says it can crush a car with one headbutt and send a train flying, and the bigger its afro, the higher its rank in the herd.

## Lore

### Biology

Bouffalant is 1.6 m tall and 94.6 kg, a shaggy brown bison with a large dark afro, two curved horns each ringed with golden bands, and a hump on its back. The Pokédex says its fluffy fur absorbs damage, even when it strikes foes with a fierce headbutt.

### Behaviour

Bouffalant lives in herds of about 20. A Bouffalant with more hair on its head holds a higher position in the herd, and one that betrays the herd loses the hair from its head for some reason. It is territorial and charges wildly, headbutting everything in its way.

### Habitat

The Pokédex describes herds that guard their own territory rather than a fixed habitat. In Black and White it roams Route 10.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Reckless, which strengthens recoil moves, and Sap Sipper, which turns Grass-type attacks into an Attack boost; Soundproof is hidden. Head Charge arrives at level 40 and Megahorn at level 50, alongside Swords Dance and Giga Impact. Base HP 95, Attack 110 and Defense 95 make it sturdy and hard-hitting, though its Speed is only 55.

### Name origin

Bouffalant may combine 'bouffant', a puffy, round hairstyle, with 'buffalo'. The Japanese name is Buffron (バッフロン), which may blend 'buffalo', 'afro' and 'bison'.

### Design inspiration

Takao Unno designed Bouffalant. Bulbapedia says it is based on a buffalo, especially the American bison, whose shaggy head hair inspired the afro. Its horns look more like an African buffalo's, and the gold rings may come from rings fitted to cattle. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Bouffalant returned in Sword and Shield through the Expansion Pass area Soothing Wetlands, after first appearing in Black and White. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

In 'Ash and Trip's Third Battle!', Trip recalls a childhood sight of Alder's Bouffalant that inspired him to become a Trainer. It physically debuted in 'Ash Versus the Champion!', facing Pikachu in a battle that ended with no winner after Alder fell asleep.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says no other known Pokémon can learn Head Charge, and the game data agrees.
- In the anime episode 'Baffling the Bouffalant!', herds attack anyone in their territory who is not wearing an afro.
- Bulbapedia lists Bouffalant as the Pokémon for May in the Unova horoscope.
- According to Bulbapedia, Bouffalant is region-exclusive in Pokémon GO, mostly turning up around New York and nearby areas.
