![Budew official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/406.webp)

Budew is a [Grass](https://pokee.si/types/grass)/[Poison](https://pokee.si/types/poison)-type Pokémon, the Bud Pokémon, number 406 (#0406) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 4 and comes from the [Sinnoh](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/sinnoh) region. It is 0.2 m tall and weighs 1.2 kg.

Budew is the Bud Pokémon, a tiny Grass and Poison baby whose buds stay shut all winter and open in spring. Its poisonous pollen brings on fits of sneezing and runny noses.

## Lore

### Biology

Budew is a bipedal, rosebud-like baby Pokémon, 0.2 m tall and 1.2 kg. It has a yellow face with narrow slit eyes, what looks like a green bib and stubby yellow feet. Two vines on its head open to show a large spot on each, one blue and one red. The Pokédex says it is very sensitive to changes in temperature.

### Behaviour

Budew works like a living calendar: the Pokédex says its bud starting to open tells people the harsh winter is over. The Sword entry says its pollen is more toxic if the Budew was raised on clean water.

### Habitat

The Pokédex says it lives alongside clear pools and ponds. In Legends: Z-A it is found across Lumiose City, including Wild Zone 2, and again in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose; it is not available in Scarlet and Violet.

### Powers

Budew's Abilities are Natural Cure and Poison Point, with Leaf Guard hidden. Its moves are gentle ones such as Absorb, Stun Spore and Worry Seed. With base stats of 40 HP and 70 Special Defense it is a fragile baby whose main job is to grow into Roselia.

### Name origin

Budew may combine 'bud' and 'dew'. The Japanese name is Subomie (スボミー), which may be a corruption of tsubomi, 'flower bud'.

### Design inspiration

A rose bud may have inspired Budew, which fits its later forms Roselia and Roserade.

### Evolution notes

Budew evolves into Roselia if it levels up during the daytime while its friendship is high. As a baby Pokémon it cannot lay eggs itself; in the games where it can be bred, it hatches from an egg of a Roselia or Roserade carrying Rose Incense.

### In the games

In Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, a Budew appears in a special episode as an old friend of Guildmaster Wigglytuff from when he was an Igglybuff. The species debuted in Diamond and Pearl as the baby form of Roselia.

### In the anime

Nando's Budew battled Dawn's Piplup and then Ash's Pikachu in 'Dawn of a New Era!', evolving into Roselia during the second fight.

### Fun facts

- Budew is number 406 in the National Pokédex and Roserade is 407, with Roselia (315) standing between them in the family; Bulbapedia says no other pair of neighbours has an evolutionary stage between them.
- The Budew Drop Inn in Motostoke, in Galar, is named after Budew and uses it as its logo.
- Budew shares the title of shortest Poison type with Foongus and Shroodle.

Over the winter, it closes its bud and endures the cold. In spring, the bud opens and releases pollen. *(Diamond, Y, Alpha Sapphire)*

When it feels the sun's warm touch, it opens its bud to release pollen. It lives alongside clear pools. *(HeartGold, SoulSilver, X, Omega Ruby)*

Sensitive to changing temperatures, the bud blooms when it's warm, releasing toxic pollen. *(Black 2, White 2)*
