Bagworm Pokémon · Bug-type

![Burmy official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/412.webp)

Burmy is a [Bug](https://pokee.si/types/bug)-type Pokémon, the Bagworm Pokémon, number 412 (#0412) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 4 and comes from the [Sinnoh](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/sinnoh) region. It is 0.2 m tall and weighs 3.4 kg.

Burmy builds itself a new coat from whatever is nearby: leaves and twigs, sand and mud, or scraps of pink insulation. The Pokédex says that even a Burmy born with nothing to build with ends up in a cloak anyway.

## How to pronounce Burmy

Burmy is pronounced **BUR-mee**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Burmy is a small larva with a black, segmented body, yellow eyes, a beak-like mouth and a coiled antenna. It is 0.2 m tall and weighs 3.4 kg. The cloak shelters it from the cold, and the Pokédex says it gets thinner in hot weather.

### Behaviour

If its cloak is damaged in battle, Burmy patches it up straight away with whatever it can find nearby. The Pokédex describes the creature inside as skinny and easily chilled.

### Habitat

The games find it in trees: Honey Trees in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Headbutt trees in HeartGold and SoulSilver, and shaking trees in Legends: Arceus. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Shed Skin and, hidden, Overcoat. Its cloak changes to match where it last battled: Plant Cloak outdoors or in tall grass, Sandy Cloak in caves or on beaches, Trash Cloak inside buildings. Apart from breeding and evolution, the cloak is purely cosmetic. With no base stat above 45, it learns little beyond Tackle, Bug Bite and Protect.

### Name origin

Burmy may combine 'burnous', a type of cloak, and 'worm', with a diminutive -y. The Japanese name is Minomucchi (ミノムッチ), from 蓑虫 minomushi ('bag moth caterpillar') and possibly プチ puchi ('small').

### Design inspiration

Bag moth caterpillars, which build a mobile shelter from silk and whatever is around, inspired Burmy. Its gender-based evolution mirrors real bag moths, where males grow into flying moths and females, in most cases, stay bag-bound.

### Evolution notes

At level 20, a female Burmy evolves into Wormadam and a male into Mothim, so gender alone picks the path. A female's cloak at that moment decides which Wormadam she becomes.

### In the games

Burmy was introduced in Diamond and Pearl. In the Mystery Dungeon series its cloaks cannot be swapped: each one turns up in different dungeons or as a separate Pokémon. It appears in Legends: Arceus but is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Burmy debuted in 'Two Degrees of Separation!', where Dawn failed in an attempt to catch it. Cheryl caught a male Burmy in 'Some Enchanted Sweetening!' after it was lured by honey she put on a tree, and it later evolved into a Mothim.

### Fun facts

- Burmy is the lone Generation IV newcomer whose evolution branches, though Bulbapedia's count ignores evolutions into regional forms.
- Outside Professor Oak's lecture segments, Burmy has never worn a Sandy or Trash Cloak in the anime.
- Along with the Geodude line, the Burmy line is the only set of species that appear in all five area lists of the Hisui Pokédex.
