King Pokémon · Psychic/Grass-type

![Calyrex official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/898.webp)

Calyrex is a [Psychic](https://pokee.si/types/psychic)/[Grass](https://pokee.si/types/grass)-type Pokémon, the King Pokémon, number 898 (#0898) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 8 and comes from the [Galar](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/galar) region. It is 1.1 m tall and weighs 7.7 kg.

Calyrex is the King Pokémon, a merciful Psychic and Grass ruler of ancient Galar and the mascot of The Crown Tundra. Riding a steed it becomes a High King, and Ice Rider Calyrex is said to chill the air to minus 300 degrees Celsius, colder than anything possible in the real world.

## How to pronounce Calyrex

## Lore

### Biology

Calyrex is 1.1 m tall and weighs 7.7 kg, a slender two-legged Pokémon with legs roughly double the length of its torso. Four prongs on its head hold a big, see-through green bud shaped like a crown, which glows when it uses its powers, and a ring of green beads circles its neck. The Pokédex says it can heal hearts and make plants spring up, and Bulbapedia says it can speak human language through telepathy.

### Behaviour

The Pokédex calls Calyrex merciful, a king who reigned over Galar long ago. The rider forms' entries show a harder side: one is said to show no mercy to those in its way yet heal their wounds afterwards, one to have moved a whole forest and its Pokémon in a night, and one to have saved forest creatures from a meteorite by foreseeing it. Bulbapedia says it draws power from people's faith and fades if they forget it.

### Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. You meet Calyrex at the Crown Shrine in The Crown Tundra, in whichever rider form matches the carrot you grew. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives from Pokémon HOME or an event.

### Powers

Its own Ability is Unnerve, which stops foes eating Berries. Using the Reins of Unity, it fuses with Glastrier into Ice Rider Calyrex (Psychic and Ice, 165 Attack, signature move Glacial Lance) or with Spectrier into Shadow Rider Calyrex (Psychic and Ghost, 165 Special Attack and 150 Speed, signature move Astral Barrage). Both have As One, which combines Unnerve with the steed's neigh Ability, and each signature move is unique to its form. Plain Calyrex has 100 HP and 80 in every other stat, with Life Dew, Helping Hand and Heal Pulse for support.

### Name origin

Calyrex may combine calyx, Latin for 'bud', with rex, Latin for 'king', and perhaps 'cavalry', for the way it mounts a steed. The Japanese name Budrex (バドレックス) may blend 'bud' and rex.

### Design inspiration

Calyrex may take its look from an arctic hare plus a crown, and Bulbapedia says each bead in its necklace carries the Hōjō clan's emblem. The way it tames Glastrier and Spectrier with a bridle seems to echo the Irish tale of Brian Boru, said to be the only man to ride a Pooka, a black horse of folklore, using a bridle made with hairs from its tail. These are fan readings.

### In the games

Calyrex is the boxart mascot of Sword and Shield's Crown Tundra DLC, where it first appeared in its base form, and it closes that expansion's Pokédex. In Pokémon Masters EX Leon has an Ice Rider Calyrex sync pair. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### Fun facts

- Plain Calyrex is called the King Pokémon, but its two rider forms are listed as High King Pokémon.
- Its Psychic and Grass typing makes it weak to Ice and Ghost, the types of its own two steeds.
- Bulbapedia says it is the only Pokémon whose Dynamax aura is blue, not the usual crimson.
- Bulbapedia says it is the only fusion Pokémon you can catch already fused; Kyurem and Necrozma have to be caught split apart.
