Carkol is a [Rock](https://pokee.si/types/rock)/[Fire](https://pokee.si/types/fire)-type Pokémon, the Coal Pokémon, number 838 (#0838) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 8 and comes from the [Galar](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/galar) region. It is 1.1 m tall and weighs 78 kg.

Carkol is the Coal Pokémon, a living minecart that makes its own fuel. The Pokédex says the coal it dropped once helped power daily life for people in Galar.

## Lore

### Biology

Carkol is 1.1 m tall and weighs 78 kg. Its head has a pair of triangular eyes and a warmly glowing orange mouth, a body of black stone on four wheel-like legs, and a heap of coal on its back that can glow orange-red. The Pokédex says it forms coal and coal tar inside its body, and that the tar holds the heap together so it never falls apart, even at high speed. It can travel faster than 30 km/h (18 mph) and breathe flames hotter than 1,000 degrees Celsius (1,800 degrees Fahrenheit).

### Behaviour

The temperature inside Carkol's body rises when it feels strong emotions, and the Pokédex says it then rolls around frantically while spewing flames.

### Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Sword and Shield it is found at Bridge Field, Stony Wilderness and Giant's Cap, with Galar Mine and the Crown Tundra's Lakeside Cave as other spots. Serebii lists a mine biome in Paldea.

### Powers

Carkol has Steam Engine or Flame Body, with Flash Fire hidden. It knows Flame Charge on evolving, then learns Rock Polish, Ancient Power, Incinerate, Stealth Rock, Heat Crash, Rock Blast and Stone Edge. With 80 base HP and 90 base Defense it is a sturdy, slow middle stage.

### Name origin

Carkol may combine 'car', 'cart', 'carbon' and 'coal' or 'charcoal'. The Japanese name is Toroggon (トロッゴン), which may join torokko ('minecart') and 'wagon'.

### Design inspiration

Carkol looks like a mine cart heaped with coal.

### Evolution notes

Carkol evolves from Rolycoly at level 18 and into Coalossal at level 34.

### In the games

Carkol turns up in East Province Area Three and in 3-star Tera Raid Battles in Scarlet and Violet, after its first appearance in Sword and Shield. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

A Carkol debuts in 'The Pendant That Starts It All (Part Two)' among the Pokémon who live aboard the Brave Olivine, where it runs in a wheel in the engine room to help power the ship and supplies coal for the furnace.

### Fun facts

- Within the Mineral Egg Group, Carkol and Coalossal are the sole Fire types.
- They are also the only Fire and Rock pairs with Rock in the first slot, unlike Magcargo, which lists Fire first.
- Bulbapedia says Professor Friede's Pokémon Seminar claims the coal Carkol makes is in infinite supply.
- If Carkol follows you into a minecart in Pokémon Pokopia, Bulbapedia says it rides the tracks itself instead of climbing in.
