## Lore

### Biology

Charizard is a bipedal orange dragon-like Pokémon with a cream belly, a long neck, two horns and broad wings with blue-green undersides. It is 1.7 m tall and weighs 90.5 kg. The Pokédex says its wings carry it to about 1,400 m (4,600 ft), its breath melts boulders and glaciers, and it has started forest fires by accident. Its flame burns hotter the more battles it has fought, and turns blue when it is truly furious.

### Behaviour

Charizard flies about looking for strong opponents and, the Pokédex says, never turns its fire on a weaker foe. In the anime, showing off your power is the mark of a weak Charizard. People have ridden Charizard in official art since 1997 trading cards, and in Alola the Charizard Glide service carries Trainers around the islands.

### Habitat

Mountains and valleys, according to the Pokédex habitat list and the anime's Charicific Valley. Pokémon Snap shows one living in the lava of a volcano.

### Powers

Charizard breathes Flamethrower, punches with Fire Punch, slices the air with Air Slash and carries riders with Fly. It has two Mega Evolutions: Mega Charizard X turns black with blue flames and becomes Fire and Dragon, while Mega Charizard Y stays Fire and Flying. Gigantamax Charizard uses G-Max Wildfire. In battle it is a fast special attacker with 109 base Special Attack and 100 base Speed.

### Name origin

Charizard likely combines 'char' (to burn) with 'lizard'. The Japanese name Lizardon (リザードン) may add 'dragon' or the '-don' ending used for prehistoric animals.

### Design inspiration

Atsuko Nishida designed Charizard, and it is her favourite Pokémon. It appears to be based on the fire-breathing dragons of European folklore, with a dash of lizard, dinosaur and mythical salamander.

### Evolution notes

Evolves from Charmeleon at level 36. The whole line shares its base stat spread with Johto's Typhlosion line.

### In the games

Leon's Charizard can Gigantamax in Sword and Shield, and in Legends: Z-A Grisham's always holds a Charizardite X. Charizard fronts the boxes of Red and FireRed and first appeared in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan). In Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A you get one by evolving Charmeleon.

### In the anime

Ash's Charmeleon became a Charizard in 'Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon' and ignored his orders until 'Charizard Chills'. In the opening of the Japanese series, Charizard is the first Pokémon you see.

### Fun facts

- In the 2020 Pokémon of the Year poll, Charizard was the most popular Generation I Pokémon with 93,968 votes, and fourth overall.
- A bee, Chilicola charizard, was named after it because of its mountain habitat and the orange colour of the first specimen found.
- Four Champions use a Charizard, more than any other Pokémon.
- Before Generation VI, Charizard and Rhyhorn had exactly the same cry.
- In the English beta of Red and Green it was called 'Charizr'.
