![Chikorita official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/152.webp)

Chikorita is a [Grass](https://pokee.si/types/grass)-type Pokémon, the Leaf Pokémon, number 152 (#0152) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the [Johto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/johto) region. It is 0.9 m tall and weighs 6.4 kg.

Chikorita is the Leaf Pokémon, a gentle Grass type whose head leaf gives off a sweet scent that calms everyone nearby, even Pokémon in the middle of a fight. It is one of the three partners Professor Elm offers at the start of Johto, and the leaf doubles as its thermometer.

## Lore

### Biology

Chikorita is a small, pale green quadruped with a big head, red-irised eyes, a stubby tail and a single white nail on each short leg. Dark green buds ring its neck and a large leaf sits on its head. It is 0.9 m tall and weighs 6.4 kg. The Pokédex says the leaf lets it judge temperature and humidity, and that Chikorita loves to sunbathe.

### Behaviour

Chikorita is docile and gentle by nature. In battle, the Pokédex says, it swishes its leaf to hold foes back.

### Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is grassland, though Bulbapedia says it is rare in the wild and mostly seen with Trainers. In Scarlet and Violet it can be found in the Coastal Biome and Torchlit Labyrinth of The Indigo Disk.

### Powers

Chikorita fights with Razor Leaf and Magical Leaf, steadies itself with Synthesis and Leech Seed, and later learns Giga Drain and Solar Beam. Its Abilities are Overgrow, which strengthens Grass moves when it is low on health, and the hidden Leaf Guard, which blocks status conditions in strong sunlight. With 65 base Defense and 65 base Special Defense it is a sturdy, defensive starter.

### Name origin

Chikorita may blend chicory, a flowering plant, with the Spanish ending -ita, meaning something small or young, and Bulbapedia says it may also nod to Kore, a Greek goddess of spring. The Japanese name is Chicorita (チコリータ).

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Chikorita appears to be based on a sauropod, and that its outline also recalls a pear or an endive, which is a type of chicory. The buds around its neck give it the look of a necklace. These are fan readings, not official statements.

### Evolution notes

Evolves into Bayleef at level 16, which becomes Meganium at level 32.

### In the games

Professor Elm hands it over in New Bark Town as a Johto first partner in Gold, Silver and Crystal, and again in HeartGold and SoulSilver. In Legends: Z-A it is one of three first partners in Lumiose City, alongside Tepig and Totodile, and it also lives in Wild Zone 20. The Mega Dimension DLC adds it to the 2★ and 3★ Grass-type wild zones of Hyperspace Lumiose.

### In the anime

Ash caught a Chikorita in 'The Chikorita Rescue'. She adored him so much that she sometimes refused to be switched out for Pikachu. Casey's Chikorita made the species' debut in 'The Double Trouble Header'.

### Fun facts

- Gold and Silver's early artwork and sprites gave Chikorita a yellow body, and a light green one replaced it by Crystal.
- Bulbapedia says Chikorita has had the most Trainers of the Johto starters in the anime, with Ash, Casey, Vincent, Silver, Lyra and Horace each having one.
- Bulbapedia notes that a programming error means Chikorita is not required to earn the Diploma in Ruby and Sapphire.
