Clay Doll Pokémon · Ground/Psychic-type

![Claydol official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/344.webp)

Claydol is a [Ground](https://pokee.si/types/ground)/[Psychic](https://pokee.si/types/psychic)-type Pokémon, the Clay Doll Pokémon, number 344 (#0344) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 1.5 m tall and weighs 108 kg.

Claydol is the Clay Doll Pokémon, a black clay figure that the Pokédex says came to life from an ancient statue, possibly after a mysterious ray of light. Its hands float beside it and fire beams.

## How to pronounce Claydol

Claydol is pronounced **KLAY-dol**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

In Japanese it is ネンドール (Nendoll).

## Lore

### Biology

Claydol is 1.5 m tall and weighs 108 kg, with a black, mud-statue body on two stubby legs and a round head ringed with eight pink eye-like structures and a peg on top. Its two orb-shaped hands are not attached to its body; it keeps them floating at its sides with psychic power and fires beams from them. The Pokédex says its body melts when wet, so at the first rain it cloaks itself in psychic power for protection.

### Behaviour

Claydol sleeps while hovering in midair, and it floats and moves by telekinesis. The Pokédex says its origins lie with clay figures made by an ancient people, who apparently modelled it on something that descended from the sky.

### Habitat

The Pokédex lists rough terrain.

### Powers

Like Baltoy, it has Levitate. It fires Hyper Beam, Psybeam and Extrasensory, and also uses Earth Power, Ancient Power and Rapid Spin. Cosmic Power boosts its defences. With 105 base Defense and 120 base Special Defense it is very hard to dent.

### Name origin

Claydol may combine 'clay' with 'idol' or 'doll', and perhaps 'dreidel', echoing Baltoy's top-like spin. The Japanese name is Nendoll (ネンドール), which may blend 念動 (nendō, telekinesis), 粘土 (nendo, clay) and 'doll'.

### Design inspiration

Claydol's shape may come from the shakōki-dogū, the 'spaceman' clay figures of Japan's Jōmon period; whether that links to the Pokédex's sky-born model is only a guess. This is a fan reading.

### Evolution notes

Evolves from Baltoy at level 36.

### In the games

Claydol waits at the Sky Pillar in Ruby and Sapphire, its debut games. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A; its most recent catchable appearances are in Sword and Shield, including a Max Lair in the Crown Tundra, and in the Sinnoh remakes, where you evolve Baltoy.

### In the anime

Claydol debuted in 'Claydol Big and Tall', where a giant one that emerged from an enormous stone Poké Ball near Izabe Lake had to be stopped before it reached a village. In 'Rhapsody in Drew', Robert's Claydol and Milotic beat Drew's Flygon and Masquerain to win the Hoenn Grand Festival.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia notes that the markings on Claydol's chest and back look like the Q-shaped Unown.
- Ash battles a Claydol in the opening sequence of the film Lucario and the Mystery of Mew.
- In Pokémon Generations' 'The Magma Stone', Buck sends out Claydol against a rampaging Heatran on Stark Mountain.
