Spiny Fish Pokémon · Poison/Ground-type

![Clodsire official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/980.webp)

Clodsire is a [Poison](https://pokee.si/types/poison)/[Ground](https://pokee.si/types/ground)-type Pokémon, the Spiny Fish Pokémon, number 980 (#0980) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the [Paldea](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/paldea) region. It is 1.8 m tall and weighs 223 kg.

Clodsire is the Spiny Fish Pokémon, a heavy Paldean swamp dweller that ferries Wooper across the water on its back. When it is attacked it pushes thick spines out of its body, a gamble that stakes everything on one move.

## Lore

### Biology

Clodsire is a rounded, four-legged amphibian, dark brown on top and light brown underneath with a wavy line between them, black beady eyes, a big mouth and tiny nostrils. Six light purple circles on its back are where its spines emerge. It is 1.8 m (5'11") tall and weighs 223 kg (491.6 lbs).

### Behaviour

The Violet Pokédex says Clodsire carries Wooper on its back and ferries them across the water from shore to shore. Bulbapedia, citing Pokémon Sleep, says it is rarely found asleep in the mud and theorises that carrying Wooper wears it out.

### Habitat

The Violet Pokédex puts it on the floor of ponds and swamps. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in all four provinces and on Glaseado Mountain, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Poison Point, which can poison attackers that touch it, Water Absorb and the hidden Unaware. It fights with Toxic Spikes, Poison Jab, Sludge Wave, Megahorn and Earthquake. With base HP 130 and Special Defense 100 but Speed 20, it is a very sturdy, very slow wall.

### Name origin

Clodsire may mix 'clod' (a lump of earth), 'sire', Siren (a salamander genus) and Quagsire. Its Japanese name, Dooh (ドオー), may blend do (earth), doku (poison), ō (king), ōsanshōuo (the Japanese giant salamander) and Nuoh, Quagsire's name.

### Design inspiration

The Iberian ribbed newt, which defends itself by pushing poison-coated ribs through its skin, seems to be the model for Clodsire's Poison type and spines. Bulbapedia also sees a mix of giant salamander and smooth-head blobfish in its looks. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Clodsire evolves from Paldean Wooper at level 20. It is the Paldean counterpart of Quagsire, which comes from the Johtonian Wooper.

### In the games

In Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted, Clodsire also appears in 4 and 6 star Tera Raid Battles.

### In the anime

Clodsire debuted in 'Showdown! The Paldea Elite Four' as Rika's Pokémon. In the next episode it teamed up with her Dugtrio and, after Terastallizing into a pure Ground type, beat Liko and Katy in the Elite Four Tag Battle.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says Clodsire is the one Generation IX evolution that exists only for a regional form.
- At 223 kg it is the heaviest Poison type introduced in Generation IX, and its base HP of 130 is also the highest among them.
- Clodsire learns Amnesia the moment it evolves, while Quagsire only gets it by levelling up to 40.
