![Cloyster official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/91.webp)

Cloyster is a [Water](https://pokee.si/types/water)/[Ice](https://pokee.si/types/ice)-type Pokémon, the Bivalve Pokémon, number 91 (#0091) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the [Kanto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kanto) region. It is 1.5 m tall and weighs 132.5 kg.

Cloyster is the Bivalve Pokémon, a spiked clam whose shell, the Pokédex says, cannot be shattered even by a bomb. Nobody has ever seen what is inside it.

## How to pronounce Cloyster

## Lore

### Biology

Cloyster is a black, pearl-faced mollusc sealed inside a light-grey shell wrapped in a jagged blue-violet outer shell covered with horns. It is 1.5 m tall and weighs 132.5 kg. Its spikes are said to be even harder than the shell, and Pokédex text says those on Cloyster from harsh tidal seas grow large and sharp. The Pokédex says nothing can pry its shell open once it slams shut.

### Behaviour

Cloyster keeps its shell shut and opens it only to attack. It fires spikes in quick volleys, using the same water-jet system that it swims with by swallowing seawater and ejecting it backwards. The Ultra Moon entry says it sometimes comes ashore to hunt.

### Habitat

The Pokédex habitat list puts Cloyster in the sea, and Bulbapedia says it is rarely found in the wild. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in all four Paldean Seas and in 4 and 5 star Tera Raids. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### Diet

The Ultra Moon Pokédex says Slowpoke tails are its favourite food.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Shell Armor and Skill Link, with Overcoat hidden. Cloyster can fire Icicle Spear and Icicle Crash and raise its Attack with Shell Smash, and it sets up Spikes and Toxic Spikes. Its base Defense of 180 is monstrous, though its 50 HP and 45 Special Defense are modest.

### Name origin

Cloyster may combine 'clam' and 'oyster' with a play on 'cloister', to shut oneself away. The Japanese name is Parshen (パルシェン), which may blend 'pearl' and 'shell'.

### Design inspiration

Ken Sugimori designed Cloyster. Bulbapedia says it appears to be based on a Spondylus, or thorny oyster, with a black pearl for its head. This is a fan reading.

### Evolution notes

Cloyster comes from Shellder with a Water Stone, and in the games it learns Icicle Spear on evolving.

### In the games

Cloyster's most notable game role is on the Blue Table of Pokémon Pinball, where shooting the ball into it starts Catch'em Mode. It is a Generation I original.

### In the anime

Cloyster debuted in 'The Bridge Bike Gang' under Tyra, and Prima's Cloyster beat Ash in 'The Mandarin Island Miss Match'. Goh caught one in 'Battling in the Freezing Raid!'.

### Fun facts

- A Moon Pokédex entry says archaeologists digging up ancient hunting tribes' tombs found spears tipped with spikes shed by Cloyster.
- Bulbapedia says Cloyster ties with Mega Slowbro for the highest base Defense of any Water Pokémon, perhaps a deliberate echo of the Shellder that forms part of Slowbro.
- Bulbapedia sees Cloyster as a counterpart to Starmie: both gain a second type when a Water Stone evolves them, but Cloyster is slow and defensive while Starmie is fast and offensive.
- Some early artwork draws the shiny spot on its head as a defined shape, perhaps a gem or pearl.
