Cofagrigus is a [Ghost](https://pokee.si/types/ghost)-type Pokémon, the Coffin Pokémon, number 563 (#0563) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the [Unova](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/unova) region. It is 1.7 m tall and weighs 76.5 kg.

Cofagrigus is the Coffin Pokémon, a golden sarcophagus that the Pokédex says traps grave robbers who mistake it for a real coffin. Carvings of it decorate ancient tombs as a symbol of the riches of kings long gone.

## How to pronounce Cofagrigus

## Lore

### Biology

Cofagrigus looks like a blue and yellow sarcophagus with menacing red eyes and four black hands that look like shadows. The mask Yamask carried now sits on its forehead, and its real face hides behind panels that slide aside when it is active. It is 1.7 m tall and weighs 76.5 kg. The Sword Pokédex says its body is sparkling gold, and people say it no longer remembers it was once human.

### Behaviour

Cofagrigus lies in wait in tombs and ruins, disguised as an elaborate coffin. The Pokédex says grave robbers who get too close end up trapped in its body.

### Habitat

Bulbapedia says it lives in tombs and ruins. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet. In Legends: Z-A it appears only in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose, in 4-star Ghost wild zones.

### Diet

The Black Pokédex says it likes to eat gold nuggets.

### Powers

Cofagrigus has the Ability Mummy, which turns the Ability of any Pokémon that hits it with a contact move into Mummy. It learns Shadow Ball, Hex, Dark Pulse, Curse, Will-O-Wisp and Destiny Bond. With huge Defense, 105 Special Defense and a Speed of only 30, it is a slow tank.

### Name origin

Cofagrigus may combine 'coffin' and 'sarcophagus', and may also involve 'grim', 'grief' or 'egregious'. The Japanese name is Desukarn (デスカーン), which may join 'death' with kan ('coffin') and pun on 'desu ka' ('is it?').

### Design inspiration

Cofagrigus may be based on Ancient Egyptian sarcophagi, especially Tutankhamun's coffins and mask, and on legends of tomb curses. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Cofagrigus evolves from Yamask at level 34; Galarian Yamask takes a different path.

### In the games

Cofagrigus runs the Cofagrigus Glorious Gold shop in Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity and Super Mystery Dungeon, and the Cake Zone in PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond. In the main series it first appeared at Relic Castle in Black and White.

### In the anime

Cofagrigus debuted in 'Explorers of the Hero's Ruin!' guarding the Golden Dark Stone alongside a Sigilyph. In 'Raid Battle in The Ruins!' two at the Colossus Ruins released Shane Seeker and his Shiny Psyduck after Pikachu attacked.

### Fun facts

- Its base Defense of 145 is the highest of any Pokémon introduced in Generation V.
- In Generation V the Global Trade System's offensive-word filter once stopped an English-language Cofagrigus being traded without a nickname; Bulbapedia says the filter has since been changed.
- Its French name Tutankafer and German name Echnatoll nod to Tutankhamun and Akhenaten, two Egyptian kings.
