## Lore

### Biology

Crabrawler is 0.6 m tall and weighs 7 kg. It has a purple shell over a striped yellow body, a long pompadour-like yellow antenna, and eyes of which one is often half-closed like a black eye. Big blue pincers like boxing gloves guard its weak spots, and they can come off from overuse but grow back quickly.

### Behaviour

Crabrawler is fiercely competitive and always aims for the top. Bulbapedia says it clings to tall buildings, and even tall people and Pokémon, and fights if someone tries to remove it. Two Crabrawler fighting look like a boxing match, and the Pokédex says a loser foams at the mouth and faints.

### Habitat

It climbs trees and tall places. Wild Crabrawler live on many Alolan routes, across Paldea's provinces, and in the Terarium's Coastal and Polar Biomes.

### Diet

Berries are its favourite food, and the Pokédex says it punches trees so the ripe ones drop, training itself while it feeds.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Hyper Cutter, which stops its Attack being lowered, and Iron Fist, which boosts punching moves; hidden Anger Point maxes its Attack after a critical hit. It fights with Brick Break, Reversal, Dynamic Punch and Close Combat, and learns the Water move Crabhammer at level 37.

### Name origin

Crabrawler may combine 'crab' with 'brawler'. The Japanese name is Makenkani (マケンカニ), which may combine makenki (a competitive spirit), kenka ('fight') and kani ('crab').

### Design inspiration

Crabrawler seems modelled on the coconut crab, a tree-climbing land hermit crab, with boxing touches such as glove-like claws and a swollen-looking eye. Bulbapedia also suggests the boxing crab. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Crabrawler evolves into Crabominable when exposed to an Ice Stone. In Generation VII it had to be levelled up at Mount Lanakila instead.

### In the games

Crabrawler is a common wild Pokémon around Alola, where it first appeared in Sun and Moon. In Legends: Z-A it is wild only in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

### In the anime

Hala's Crabrawler debuted in 'Trial and Tribulation!' and proved a tough opponent for Ash's Rowlet before losing. In 'Pikachu's Exciting Adventure!' another tried to steal Ash's hat and was beaten by Meltan.

### Fun facts

- It was known by the code name 'Crab 1' during development, according to Bulbapedia, which cites a 2016 Game Informer article.
- Crabrawler and its evolution are the sole Fighting types in the Water 3 Egg Group.
- Violet's Pokédex says its pincers are popular in paella because the shells make a tasty stock.
