# Crobat

Bat Pokémon · Poison/Flying-type

Crobat is a [Poison](https://pokee.si/types/poison)/[Flying](https://pokee.si/types/flying)-type Pokémon, the Bat Pokémon, number 169 (#0169) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the [Johto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/johto) region. It is 1.8 m tall and weighs 75 kg.

Crobat is the Bat Pokémon whose hind legs have become a second pair of wings, which lets it fly faster and more quietly. The Pokédex says its fangs are razor sharp, so a bite in the dark may go unnoticed.

## Lore

### Biology

Crobat is a purple bat with a round body, ears that end in long points, red-pupilled yellow eyes and a mouth that usually bares its teeth. Both pairs of wings have green-blue membranes; the upper pair is slightly larger, and the lower pair grew from its hind legs. It is 1.8 m tall and weighs 75 kg. With no legs left it moves awkwardly on the ground, where all it can do is crawl, so it rests hanging from a branch by its rear wings.

### Behaviour

Crobat flies without a sound and can slip through cramped caves without slowing down. The Pokédex says that after a long flight it rests one pair of wings and switches pairs as it tires, which lets it keep going all day.

### Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is caves, and Bulbapedia adds tree branches. It cannot be caught in Scarlet and Violet, but Legends: Z-A's Mega Dimension DLC places it in Hyperspace Lumiose.

### Diet

The Pokédex says it feeds on the blood of people and Pokémon, and that it grows weak and cannot fly if it goes without.

### Powers

Its Ability Inner Focus stops it flinching, and the hidden Ability Infiltrator lets its moves slip past Reflect, Light Screen and Safeguard. It knows Cross Poison on evolving and also learns Air Slash, Tailwind and Toxic. Its base Speed of 130 is the highest of any Pokémon introduced in Generation II, backed by 90 Attack.

### Name origin

Crobat may combine 'cross' and 'bat', and could also involve 'acrobat' for its agility and kuro (黒, 'black'). The Japanese name is Crobat (クロバット).

### Design inspiration

Crobat appears to be based on a bat. Its extra wings may reflect how a bat's limbs are all joined by flight membrane, its huge Speed might nod to the Mexican free-tailed bat, and its Poison type may come from vampire bat saliva. These are fan readings, not official statements.

### Evolution notes

Golbat evolves into Crobat when it levels up with high friendship.

### In the games

Crobat first appeared in Gold and Silver as the new evolution of Golbat. In FireRed and LeafGreen, Golbat cannot evolve into it unless the player already has the National Pokédex.

### In the anime

Brock's Golbat evolved into a Crobat in 'Control Freak!', which was also the species' anime debut. Brock passed it to his younger brother Forrest after the Johto saga and later took it back.

### Fun facts

- Its cry exists in Red and Blue's files, years before it debuted, as one of the sounds MissingNo. can make.
- In the Spaceworld '97 demo, an early design appears to have been a beta Pokémon called Ekushingu (エクシング).
- Its colours are the reverse of Golbat's, and the same goes for their Shiny forms.
