# Croconaw

Big Jaw Pokémon · Water-type

![Croconaw official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/159.webp)

Croconaw is a [Water](https://pokee.si/types/water)-type Pokémon, the Big Jaw Pokémon, number 159 (#0159) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the [Johto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/johto) region. It is 1.1 m tall and weighs 25 kg.

Croconaw is the Big Jaw Pokémon, and once it bites down the Pokédex says it holds on until its fangs fall out. The tips of those fangs slant backwards like fish hooks, so they are impossible to pull out once they sink in.

## How to pronounce Croconaw

## Lore

### Biology

Croconaw is a bipedal crocodilian with rounded jaws, a mostly blue body and a yellow lower jaw. It is 1.1 m tall and weighs 25 kg. Clusters of red spikes sit on its head, between its shoulders and near the tip of its tail. The Pokédex says its mouth always holds 48 fangs, though Bulbapedia notes that only six can be made out in its design, and lost fangs quickly grow back.

### Behaviour

Croconaw opens its huge jaws wide when it attacks. The Pokédex says that prey it catches on those barbed teeth has no hope of escape.

### Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is the water's edge, and Bulbapedia says it can rarely be found near water. In Scarlet and Violet you get one by evolving Totodile in The Indigo Disk, and in Legends: Z-A by evolving Totodile or in the 3★ and 4★ Water-type wild zones of the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

### Powers

Croconaw uses Water Gun, Bite, Ice Fang, Crunch, Slash, Aqua Tail, Superpower and Hydro Pump. Its Abilities are Torrent and the hidden Sheer Force. With 80 base Attack and 80 base Defense it is a sturdy biter.

### Name origin

Croconaw may combine crocodile and gnaw, and possibly maw or jaw. The Japanese name is Alligates (アリゲイツ), possibly from alligator.

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia reads Croconaw as a crocodilian, though its head resembles a theropod dinosaur's. The spikes on its head and its chest pattern may recall a caveman's wild hair and animal-skin clothing. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Croconaw is the middle stage, growing out of Totodile at level 18 and becoming Feraligatr at level 30.

### In the games

Croconaw is the middle step of the Totodile line, available in Gold and Silver only by evolving Totodile. In Pokémon Colosseum, Bulbapedia says, a save file can produce just one Croconaw unless you trade for more.

### In the anime

Marina's Wani-Wani made its TV debut as a Croconaw in 'The Legend of Thunder!'. In 'The Pirates of Decolore!', an abandoned Croconaw leads a gang of pirate Pokémon until they apologise and join Officer Jenny's coast guard.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says no other first partner Pokémon has a shorter level gap between its two evolutions: only 12 levels.
- Bulbapedia says the GTS filter that blocks offensive nicknames stops an English-language Croconaw from being traded in Black and White unless it has a nickname.
- In Pokémon Adventures, Silver's Croconaw evolved into Feraligatr alongside the other two Johto partners, during a fight with an enraged Lugia.
