Crustle is a [Bug](https://pokee.si/types/bug)/[Rock](https://pokee.si/types/rock)-type Pokémon, the Stone Home Pokémon, number 558 (#0558) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the [Unova](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/unova) region. It is 1.4 m tall and weighs 200 kg.

Crustle is the Stone Home Pokémon, a Bug and Rock hermit crab that carries a heavy boulder on its back and fights rivals over territory. The Pokédex says whoever's boulder is broken loses the fight.

## Lore

### Biology

Crustle is an orange, crustacean-like Pokémon 1.4 m tall and 200 kg, with glaring yellow eyes and dark grey claw tips and feet. Its enormous shell looks like a cut-away block of layered rock, and the Pokédex says its legs can lug heavy slabs for days on end, even across arid land. Its thick claws are its greatest weapon, strong enough to crack a Rhyperior's carapace.

### Behaviour

Crustle is highly territorial and fights viciously over territory with others of its kind. The Black entry says the loser is the one whose boulder is broken, and the Black 2 and White 2 entries say it then feels unsure and starts to weaken. According to the Sword entry, it stays inside its boulder when it rains.

### Habitat

Crustle prefers dry climates. In Black and White it appears on Route 18 in dark grass, and in Sword and Shield on Route 8, in Axew's Eye and in Max Raid Battles. It is not available in Scarlet, Violet or Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Sturdy and Shell Armor, with Weak Armor hidden. Shell Smash at level 50 and Rock Wrecker at level 56 pair with Stealth Rock, Rock Slide and X-Scissor. With 125 base Defense and 105 Attack it is a tough attacker, though slow at 45 Speed.

### Name origin

Crustle may combine 'crust', 'crustacean', 'crab' and 'castle'. The Japanese name is Iwapalace (イワパレス), possibly from iwa ('rock') and 'palace'.

### Design inspiration

Crustle is modelled on a hermit crab, and its shell resembles a block of rock strata rather than a seashell, though Bulbapedia notes the design also seems to echo ornately coloured hermit crab shells.

### Evolution notes

Crustle evolves from Dwebble at level 34 and is the final stage.

### In the games

In Black 2 and White 2 Crustle can be found in Seaside Cave with the help of the Colress MCHN, and in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon it lives in the Ultra Space Wilds. It first appeared in Black and White as the evolved form of Dwebble.

### In the anime

Cilan's Dwebble evolved into a Crustle in 'Crisis at Chargestone Cave!' during a battle against Team Rocket. In 'A Restoration Confrontation! Part 1', excavators used several Crustle while working in Twist Mountain.

### Fun facts

- In the Unova horoscope, Bulbapedia says, Crustle stands for July.
- Bulbapedia says Crustle is the one Pokémon in Pokémon Shuffle that can take 8 Raise Max Level Enhancements.
- Bulbapedia, citing Pokémon Sleep, says a Crustle sometimes sleeps on top of its boulder, taken as a sign that it feels its territory is secure.
