Dodrio is a [Normal](https://pokee.si/types/normal)/[Flying](https://pokee.si/types/flying)-type Pokémon, the Triple Bird Pokémon, number 85 (#0085) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the [Kanto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kanto) region. It is 1.8 m tall and weighs 85.2 kg.

Dodrio is the Triple Bird Pokémon, a three-headed runner with a brain in every head. The Crystal Pokédex warns that an enemy who takes its eyes off even one head gets pecked severely.

## How to pronounce Dodrio

Dodrio is pronounced **doh-DREE-oh**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Dodrio is a wingless bird with three long necks, each head crested with a black V, above a black lower body and a tail of three pale red feathers. It stands 1.8 m tall and weighs 85.2 kg. Its triple hearts and lungs give it the stamina to run vast distances without rest, the Pokédex says, and its heads stand for joy, sadness and anger.

### Behaviour

The heads squabble until one of them eats, which satisfies the other two, and Bulbapedia says the strongest head, on the thickest neck, takes charge. The Ruby Pokédex says heads facing three different ways mean it is on guard, and it may peck anyone nearby. It can overthink and freeze, and usually sleeps standing up.

### Habitat

The Pokédex habitat list puts Dodrio in grasslands, where it runs even in dry seasons. In Scarlet and Violet it is not wild in Paldea or Kitakami, but The Indigo Disk's Savanna Biome has it.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Run Away and Early Bird, with Tangled Feet hidden. Dodrio attacks with Tri Attack, Drill Peck and Brave Bird, and Swords Dance sharpens it. Its 110 base Attack ties Snorlax's as the highest of any Generation I Normal type, and its 110 base Speed makes it a fast physical attacker.

### Name origin

Dodrio may combine 'dodo' with 'trio', a group of three. The Japanese name is Dodorio (ドードリオ), which may blend dodo, tori (bird) and trio.

### Design inspiration

Like Doduo, it seems closer to an ostrich than a dodo, and Bulbapedia says its crests suggest a cassowary. The three heads may nod to the Buddhist asuras, three-headed demigods sometimes said to show joy, anger and sorrow. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Dodrio evolves from Doduo at level 31; the Pokédex says one head splits in two when it does.

### In the games

Dodrio is the Pokémon every player needs for Dodrio Berry Picking, a Generation III wireless mini-game. It debuted in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan), and in Pokémon UNITE it is a playable melee speedster starting as Doduo. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Falkner's Dodrio nearly beat Pikachu in 'Fighting Flyer with Fire' before Ash turned Falkner's own strategy against it. Gary's Dodrio, evolved from his Doduo, attacked Butch and Cassidy's helicopter in 'Putting the Air Back in Aerodactyl!' to thwart another attempt to capture Aerodactyl.

### Fun facts

- Its weight of 85.2 kg gives it the same whole number as its National Pokédex number, 85.
- Dodrio was the first Pokémon physically seen in the anime outside the opening theme, crowing in Pallet Town in 'Pokémon - I Choose You!'.
- Doduo's Pokédex says it runs at 100 km/h (60 mph) and Dodrio's nearly 60 km/h (40 mph), yet Dodrio has the higher Speed stat.

## Pokédex entries

One of Doduo's two heads splits to form a unique species. It runs close to 40 mph in prairies. *(Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Let’s Go, Eevee!)*

Apparently, the heads aren't the only parts of the body that Dodrio has three of. It has three sets of hearts and lungs as well, so it is capable of running long distances without rest. *(Sapphire, Alpha Sapphire)*

Watch out if Dodrio's three heads are looking in three separate directions. It's a sure sign that it is on its guard. Don't go near this Pokémon if it's being wary - it may decide to peck you. *(Ruby, Omega Ruby)*

An odd species that is rarely found. The three heads respectively represent joy, sadness, and anger. *(FireRed, Y)*

An enemy that takes its eyes off any of the three heads--even for a second--will get pecked severely. *(Crystal, X)*

When Doduo evolves into this odd breed, one of its heads splits into two. It runs at nearly 40 mph. *(Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Black, White, Black 2, White 2)*
