# Dugtrio

Mole Pokémon · Ground-type

![Dugtrio official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/51.webp)

Dugtrio is a [Ground](https://pokee.si/types/ground)-type Pokémon, the Mole Pokémon, number 51 (#0051) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the [Kanto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kanto) region. It is 0.7 m tall and weighs 33.3 kg.

Dugtrio is made of three Diglett heads on one body that nobody has ever seen, and Pokédex entries cannot agree whether it is three Diglett joined together or one Diglett that split into three. Ultra Sun's entry adds that a huge fight can still break out over which head eats first.

## How to pronounce Dugtrio

Dugtrio is pronounced **dug-TREE-oh**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

In Japanese it is ダグトリオ.

## Lore

### Biology

Dugtrio is 0.7 m tall and weighs 33.3 kg, with three brown heads that each have black eyes and a round pink nose. The heads are smooth, incredibly hard, and take turns popping up and down to break up the earth. The Pokédex claims it burrows about 100 km (60 miles) down, setting off huge earthquakes.

### Behaviour

The three heads think alike and work as a team, and Pokémon Sleep says the trio sleeps together and never separates. Bulbapedia says its digging aerates farmland soil.

### Habitat

Like Diglett it is a cave Pokémon that tunnels under the earth, though Bulbapedia says it sometimes lives in hollow trees. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild across Paldea, including Alfornada Cavern and the Asado Desert.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Sand Veil, Arena Trap and the hidden Sand Force. It uses Earthquake, Sucker Punch and Night Slash, and its base Speed of 120 is the highest of any Ground type. Alolan Dugtrio is Ground and Steel, with gold hair made of thin but heavy steel strands that senses faraway vibrations. Alolans treat it as an earth deity, and superstition says taking its hair brings bad luck.

### Name origin

Dugtrio may combine 'dug' and 'trio'. The Japanese name is Dugtrio (ダグトリオ), the same as in English.

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia suggests Dugtrio may be inspired by naked mole-rats, which defend their nests by lining up in a tunnel with only their heads showing to a snake. Alolan Dugtrio also looks like a stereotypical beach surfer from Southern California, tanned with blond hair. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Dugtrio evolves from Diglett at level 26, and Alolan Dugtrio from Alolan Diglett at the same level.

### In the games

A Dugtrio runs the notice boards at Wigglytuff's Guild in Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild in Paldea, with the Alolan form in The Indigo Disk, but Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

In 'The Underground Round Up' Poncho used a Dugtrio and several Diglett to tunnel a town's Electrode away. Goh caught the Dugtrio that led the crop-eating Diglett in 'How Are You Gonna Keep 'Em Off of the Farm?' and gave it to the farmer Laxton.

### Fun facts

- Its official weight of 33.3 kg is about 14 times what three Diglett weigh together (3 x 0.8 kg = 2.4 kg).
- Despite being separate species, Kantonian Dugtrio and Paldea's Wugtrio have identical base stats in all six categories.
- Dugtrio is immune to Telekinesis, and on the Pokédex comparison screen in X and Y the Flying-type Pokémon gives up before lifting its sprite.
