Mystic Pokémon · Ground/Dragon-type

![Flygon official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/330.webp)

Flygon is a [Ground](https://pokee.si/types/ground)/[Dragon](https://pokee.si/types/dragon)-type Pokémon, the Mystic Pokémon, number 330 (#0330) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 2 m tall and weighs 82 kg.

Flygon is the Mystic Pokémon, a desert dragon nicknamed 'The Desert Spirit' because its beating wings sound like a woman singing from inside the sandstorm it kicks up.

## How to pronounce Flygon

Flygon is pronounced **FLY-gon**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Listen to Flygon said out loud:

In Japanese it is フライゴン.

## Lore

### Biology

Flygon is 2 m tall and weighs 82 kg. It is a lime-green, slightly insect-like dragon with large red-trimmed rhombus-shaped wings, two long feelers on its head, and a long tail ending in a fan of three small rhombuses. Red translucent lenses protect its small eyes from the sand.

### Behaviour

Flygon whips up sandstorms with its wings and hides in the middle of them, so it rarely shows itself to people. Sapphire's Pokédex says the wing song is the only sound heard in the storm, and Ultra Moon says those lured by it find themselves stranded. According to Ultra Sun, Flygon hide Krookodile in their sandstorms and share the prey they catch together.

### Habitat

The Pokédex places it in rough terrain, and Bulbapedia says it lives in deserts. In Scarlet and Violet's base games it can only be traded for or transferred from Pokémon HOME, but The Indigo Disk adds Blueberry Academy's Savanna Biome with 5-star and 6-star Tera Raids. It is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Levitate is its only Ability. It learns Dragon Claw the moment it evolves, and fights with Earthquake, Dragon Dance and Sand Tomb. With base Attack and Speed both 100 it is a fast, hard-hitting Ground and Dragon attacker.

### Name origin

Flygon may combine 'fly' and 'dragon', or invert 'dragonfly'. The Japanese name is フライゴン (Flygon), the same as the English.

### Design inspiration

Flygon appears to be based on an adult antlion with dragonfly traits, and some dragonflies are called 'sand dragons', which could explain its Ground and Dragon typing. Its feelers might nod to the Shadhavar, a medieval desert spirit said to lure prey with music from its horn. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Flygon evolves from Vibrava at level 45 and is the final stage of its line.

### In the games

Raihan, the Dragon-specialist Gym Leader of Hammerlocke in Sword and Shield, uses a Flygon in his Gym battle. Flygon debuted in Ruby and Sapphire.

### In the anime

Drew's Flygon fought in the Hoenn Grand Festival in 'Rhapsody in Drew'. In 'Aim For The Eight!', Raihan's Flygon beat Ash's Dragonite but fell to Ash's Gigantamax Gengar.

### Fun facts

- Ken Sugimori said in Nintendo Dream magazine (April 2015) that Flygon was due a Mega Evolution in X and Y, but he dropped it because of artist's block.
- Goh caught a Trapinch, a Vibrava and a Flygon during the same episode, 'Making Battles in the Sand!'.
- In 'Showdown at the Gates of Warp!', Dialga and Palkia's influence devolves Goh's Flygon into a Vibrava and then a Trapinch before it is restored.
- In Pokémon Adventures, Norman uses a Flygon for air travel before giving it to Wally.

## Pokédex entries

It is nicknamed “The Desert Spirit” because the flapping of its wings sounds like a woman singing. *(HeartGold, SoulSilver, Shield)*

This Pokémon hides in the heart of sandstorms it creates and seldom appears where people can see it. *(Moon, Sword)*

People continue to have their hearts stolen by its enchanting songs and find themselves stranded in the desert. *(Ultra Moon)*

By flapping their wings, Flygon cause sandstorms that conceal Krookodile. The team then splits the prey they catch. *(Ultra Sun)*

The flapping of its wings sounds something like singing. Those lured by the sound are enveloped in a sandstorm, becoming Flygon's prey. *(Sun)*

Flygon whips up a sandstorm by flapping its wings. The wings create a series of notes that sound like singing. Because the “singing” is the only thing that can be heard in a sandstorm, this Pokémon is said to be the desert spirit. *(Sapphire, Alpha Sapphire)*
