# Forretress

Bagworm Pokémon · Bug/Steel-type

![Forretress official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/205.webp)

Forretress is a [Bug](https://pokee.si/types/bug)/[Steel](https://pokee.si/types/steel)-type Pokémon, the Bagworm Pokémon, number 205 (#0205) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the [Johto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/johto) region. It is 1.2 m tall and weighs 125.8 kg.

Forretress is a Bug and Steel type that lives sealed inside a steel shell, and the Pokédex says nobody has ever seen what is inside. The shell opens for prey so quickly that its insides cannot be made out.

## How to pronounce Forretress

Forretress is pronounced **FOR-ih-tres**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Forretress is a round, limbless bug, 1.2 m (3'11") tall and 125.8 kg (277.3 lbs). Bumpy steel plates with zigzag edges cap its body and open along the back and front to show a smooth red inner shell with four cylindrical spikes and a slit holding round eyes. Bulbapedia says whatever else lies inside is unknown, and that in Scarlet and Violet it is shown levitating.

### Behaviour

Forretress stays rooted to a tree trunk, and the Pokédex says it drives off enemies by firing pieces of its shell. The Ultra Sun Pokédex calls this an automatic reflex, not a decision. It opens up only to snap up prey, so fast that the interior is never seen.

### Habitat

Bulbapedia says it lives in forests, clinging to tree trunks. In Scarlet and Violet it is found along the Socarrat Trail and at Casseroya Lake.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Sturdy and, hidden, Overcoat. It gets Heavy Slam on evolving, which hits harder the more it outweighs its target, and learns Gyro Ball at level 46. Its base Defense of 140 is huge, but its Speed of 40 makes it a slow wall.

### Name origin

Forretress may combine 'forest' and 'fortress', possibly with ferro (Portuguese for 'iron') and 'turret'. The Japanese name is Foretos (フォレトス), which Bulbapedia explains the same way.

### Design inspiration

A bagworm living in a discarded chestnut or walnut shell may lie behind Forretress, which would explain its two-half shell like a giant clam's. Its weapon theme echoes gun turrets, bombs, cannons and fortresses. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

It evolves from Pineco at level 31.

### In the games

In Scarlet and Violet, Forretress appears in 4-star Tera Raid Battles, and it has been around since Gold and Silver. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Brock's Pineco evolved into a Forretress in 'Entei at Your Own Risk' to rescue him and several other Pokémon from Team Rocket at a hot spring. It was the only Pokémon he took to Hoenn, and he left it at home when he went to Sinnoh.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says Forretress opens the list of original Steel types in National Pokédex order, because Magnemite and Magneton only gained the type after Generation I.
- In Pokémon: Magikarp Jump, Forretress can appear during training, and Magikarp earns JP by pushing it in the 'Forretress Push' session.
- In Scarlet and Violet, Forretress knows the Electric move Zap Cannon from level 1, odd for a Bug and Steel type.

When something approaches it, it fires off fragments of its steel shell in attack. This is not a conscious action but a conditioned reflex. *(Ultra Sun)*

Forretress conceals itself inside its hardened steel shell. The shell is opened when the Pokémon is catching prey, but it does so at such a quick pace that the shell's inside cannot be seen. *(Ruby, Sapphire, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire)*

It remains immovably rooted to its tree. It scatters pieces of its hard shell to drive its enemies away. *(Silver, FireRed, SoulSilver, Y)*
