![Galvantula official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/596.webp)

Galvantula is a [Bug](https://pokee.si/types/bug)/[Electric](https://pokee.si/types/electric)-type Pokémon, the EleSpider Pokémon, number 596 (#0596) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the [Unova](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/unova) region. It is 0.8 m tall and weighs 14.3 kg.

Galvantula is the EleSpider Pokémon, a tarantula-like Bug and Electric type that weaves electrified webs and flings charged fur. The Pokédex says a hit from that fur could leave a foe paralysed for three full days and nights.

## How to pronounce Galvantula

Galvantula is pronounced **gal-VAN-chuh-luh**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Galvantula is 0.8 m tall and 14.3 kg, with yellow and light purple fur, three thick yellow stripes down its back, and two big blue forward-facing eyes above four small ones on its forehead. Two long pedipalps hang from its head, blue and hairless on the lower half, and Bulbapedia says they are strong enough to hold down unruly prey.

### Behaviour

Galvantula is not aggressive unless provoked, though Bulbapedia says it may attack in groups if bothered. When attacked it spits out electrified threads that form a barrier, and the strands serve for attack as well as defence.

### Habitat

Neither the Pokédex nor Bulbapedia names a natural habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild only in The Indigo Disk, in the Canyon Biome, Chargestone Cavern and Polar Biome.

### Diet

It eats prey immobilised by its electrified webs, and the Pokédex says it sets electrified threads by the nests of bird Pokémon to snare chicks too young to fly well.

### Powers

Galvantula has Compound Eyes or Unnerve, with Swarm hidden. It uses Sticky Web, which lowers the Speed of opposing Pokémon that switch in, along with Electroweb, Discharge, Thunder and Bug Buzz. The Pokédex says it fires charged fur from its abdomen. With base Speed 108 and Special Attack 97 it is a fast special attacker.

### Name origin

Galvantula appears to combine 'galvanism' and 'tarantula'. The Japanese name is Dentula (デンチュラ), possibly from den (electricity) and 'tarantula'.

### Design inspiration

Saya Tsuruta designed Galvantula. Its design seems to draw on a tarantula, and its electric webs resemble electric fences.

### Evolution notes

Galvantula evolves from Joltik at level 36 and does not evolve further.

### In the games

In Black and White, where it debuted, the only way to get a Galvantula is to evolve a Joltik. In Sword and Shield it is found on Route 7 and at the Lake of Outrage, and in Scarlet and Violet it appears in 4 star Tera Raid Battles in The Indigo Disk. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

In 'Crisis at Chargestone Cave!' Galvantula and Joltik steal electricity from Pokémon and objects after Team Rocket takes the rocks they usually feed on. Colress calls his Galvantula his "star test subject" in 'Team Plasma's Pokémon Power Plot!'.

### Fun facts

- Despite being based on a spider, Bulbapedia notes that Galvantula has only four legs.
- Galvantula gets Sticky Web the moment it evolves, and Joltik does not learn it by levelling up in Scarlet and Violet.
- In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Black catches a Galvantula after it injures people at a commercial shoot, and nicknames it Tula.
