# Glameow

Catty Pokémon · Normal-type

![Glameow official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/431.webp)

Glameow is a [Normal](https://pokee.si/types/normal)-type Pokémon, the Catty Pokémon, number 431 (#0431) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 4 and comes from the [Sinnoh](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/sinnoh) region. It is 0.5 m tall and weighs 3.9 kg.

Glameow looks like a pampered house cat, but the Pokédex says it hooks its claws into its Trainer's nose if it is not fed. The Catty Pokémon is a fickle Normal type whose tail dances like a ribbon when it is happy.

## How to pronounce Glameow

## Lore

### Biology

Glameow is a slender grey cat, 0.5 m tall and 3.9 kg, with white-tipped ears, yellow eyes with blue irises and a long, spring-shaped tail that ends in a white puff. Its claws stay hidden until it needs them. The Legends: Arceus Pokédex says its helical tail and piercing gaze can bewitch humans, and an older entry says its glare puts foes into a mild hypnotic state.

### Behaviour

Glameow is moody. The Pokédex says it purrs when it feels affectionate and claws when it is displeased, and that some people love it for exactly that fickleness. Bulbapedia adds that it is cowardly and often runs from Trainers in the wild, and fights hard only when provoked.

### Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat; Bulbapedia says its tame, house-cat ways mean it turns up in urban areas. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Limber and Own Tempo, with Keen Eye hidden. Fake Out, Fury Swipes and Slash use its claws, Hypnosis and Charm use its eyes and looks, and Play Rough arrives late in its learnset. With Speed 85 but Attack 55 it is quick and light on power.

### Name origin

Glameow may combine 'glamour' and 'meow'. The Japanese name is Nyarmar (ニャルマー), which may blend nyā, the Japanese word for a cat's mew, with 'glamour'.

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Glameow appears to be based on a Devon Rex cat and a ribbon gymnast. Its spring-like tail may nod to an Edo-period idea that snake-tailed cats could bewitch people, which would fit the Legends: Arceus entry.

### Evolution notes

Glameow evolves into Purugly at level 38.

### In the games

Glameow first appeared as a Pearl exclusive in Diamond and Pearl, and it cannot be found in Diamond or Platinum. It returned in Shining Pearl and appears in Legends: Arceus, in the Cobalt Coastlands and Alabaster Icelands, including mass outbreaks.

### In the anime

Johanna's Glameow debuted in 'Following a Maiden's Voyage!', which was also the species' debut. It stays home to watch Dawn's Contests with Johanna, who was a Top Coordinator in her youth. Zoey's Glameow, introduced in 'Mounting a Coordinator Assault!', is her main Contest Pokémon.

### Fun facts

- In 'For The Love of Meowth!', Meowth fell for Mamie's Glameow, but lost interest when it evolved into a bossy Purugly.
- Between Generations VI and VII Glameow's ears were repositioned, an odd tweak for a Pokémon not new that generation; Bulbapedia says only Aron also had its model altered in that way.
- Bulbapedia says Glameow and Purugly are the earliest Pokémon, setting Legendaries and Mythicals aside, never to appear in a regional Pokédex outside their home region.
