# Goldeen

Goldfish Pokémon · Water-type

![Goldeen official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/118.webp)

Goldeen is a [Water](https://pokee.si/types/water)-type Pokémon, the Goldfish Pokémon, number 118 (#0118) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the [Kanto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kanto) region. It is 0.6 m tall and weighs 15 kg.

Goldeen is the Goldfish Pokémon, a graceful swimmer whose billowing tail fin is likened to a ballroom dress. Behind the elegance is a sharp horn: the Pokédex says a Goldeen kept in an aquarium can break out through even very thick glass with a single ram of its horn.

## How to pronounce Goldeen

Goldeen is pronounced **gol-DEEN**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

In Japanese it is トサキント (Tosakinto).

## Lore

### Biology

Goldeen is a white fish with orange markings, 0.6 m long and 15 kg. It has round blue eyes with orange lids, prominent pink lips, and a horn on its forehead that Bulbapedia says is larger on males. Its strong fins let it hold a steady five knots, according to the Pokédex.

### Behaviour

Goldeen looks elegant but has a wild temperament, and the Pokédex says it jabs powerfully with its horn if it senses danger. Goldeen compete over whose horn is thickest and sharpest. In spring, groups swim up rivers and waterfalls to lay eggs, and the Gold Pokédex says its elegant fin movements earned it the name Water Dancer.

### Habitat

The Pokédex says Goldeen loves roaming free in rivers and ponds. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet.

### Powers

Swift Swim doubles its Speed in rain, Water Veil prevents burns, and Lightning Rod is hidden, redirecting Electric moves to it. It learns Horn Attack at level 15, Waterfall at 35, Megahorn at 45 and Horn Drill at 50. Its best base stat is Attack at 67.

### Name origin

Goldeen may combine 'goldfish' or 'golden' with 'queen'. The Japanese name is Tosakinto (トサキント), which may come from 土佐金 tosakin, a curly fantail goldfish breed.

### Design inspiration

Goldeen seems based on the tosakin curly fantail goldfish, judging by its flat tail and red and white colouring, and it may also draw on the kōhaku koi. Its billowing tail, lips and eyelids give it a queenly look, a theme that may come from 金魚 kingyo, the Japanese word for goldfish. Its horn may nod to Matsya, the giant horned fish avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Goldeen evolves into Seaking at level 33.

### In the games

Goldeen appears as a Poké Ball summon in the Super Smash Bros. games. It is one of the original Generation I Pokémon, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Misty's Goldeen debuted in 'Pokémon Emergency!' but is seen little, because it flails when out of water. In 'A Little Rocket R & R!', Goh fished a Goldeen out of the water at the Resort Area and caught it.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says an early demo shown at Spaceworld '97 suggests Goldeen once had a pre-evolution called Gyopin that would have evolved at level 16.
- Goldeen uses Splash in every Super Smash Bros. game, yet Bulbapedia says it has no way to learn Splash in any core Pokémon game.
- The Moon Pokédex says some Trainers are so spellbound by its horn and fins that they raise nothing but Goldeen.
