# Golurk

Automaton Pokémon · Ground/Ghost-type

![Golurk official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/623.webp)

Golurk is a [Ground](https://pokee.si/types/ground)/[Ghost](https://pokee.si/types/ghost)-type Pokémon, the Automaton Pokémon, number 623 (#0623) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the [Unova](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/unova) region. It is 2.8 m tall and weighs 330 kg.

Golurk is the Automaton Pokémon, a giant clay guardian that can fly at Mach speeds, with its power held in by a seal across its chest. The Pokédex says that if the seal is removed it rages out of control and can reduce a town to rubble.

## How to pronounce Golurk

Golurk is pronounced **GOH-lurk**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Golurk is 2.8 m tall and 330 kg, a teal clay giant in armour-like plating, with a bandage-like seal screwed over a crack in its chest. It can draw its limbs inside its body and blast energy out of its wrists and waist like rocket thrusters, or fold into a cannon and fire energy beams. The Pokédex says ancient castles had artillery platforms where Golurk perched to fire.

### Behaviour

The Pokédex says ancient people made Golurk to protect people and Pokémon, and one entry adds that some say they invented it to be a labourer. It follows its master's orders faithfully. One theory holds that a perpetual motion machine inside it makes limitless energy, though this has not been proven.

### Habitat

The Pokédex gives no natural habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in The Indigo Disk's Canyon and Polar Biomes.

### Powers

Iron Fist strengthens its punching moves, such as Shadow Punch, Mega Punch and Dynamic Punch, and it also uses Phantom Force and Earthquake; Klutz is a drawback, and the Hidden Ability No Guard makes every move involving it hit. Golurkite lets Golurk Mega Evolve into Mega Golurk, a form added to Legends: Z-A by its Mega Dimension DLC. Bulbapedia says Mega Evolution stirs its energy up so much that the seal hangs loose, leaving it always on the verge of exploding, and it can fire its fists like rockets. Mega Golurk stands 4 m tall with Attack 159 and Defense 105, and its Ability Unseen Fist lets contact moves strike through Protect.

### Name origin

Golurk may combine 'golem' with 'lurk', hinting at its Ghost type. The Japanese name is Goloog (ゴルーグ), which may blend 'golem' and saibōgu, 'cyborg'.

### Design inspiration

James Turner designed Golurk and Golett. Bulbapedia says the strap on its chest may echo the Golem of Prague, a Jewish legend in which a clay giant controlled by a parchment went berserk when the parchment was removed. Its transforming body may also recall the giant robots of mecha anime. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Golurk evolves from Golett at level 43 and does not evolve further.

### In the games

Golurk can be found inside Dragonspiral Tower in Black 2 and White 2, and Golett evolves into it from Black and White, where it first appeared. In Legends: Z-A it is found in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

### In the anime

Goh caught a giant Golurk that guarded the Colossus Ruins in 'Raid Battle in The Ruins!'. Hapu's Golurk first appeared in 'That's Some Spicy Island Research!', and she often uses it to fly around Poni Island.

### Fun facts

- Of the Pokémon introduced in Generation V, Golurk is the tallest and heaviest Ground type and also the tallest and heaviest Ghost type.
- Its base Attack of 124 is the highest of any Ghost type introduced in Generation V.
- Golurk has no gender, yet the PokéPad entry in PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond calls it male.
- Three Golurk appear in the film Pokémon Detective Pikachu.
