Grafaiai is a [Poison](https://pokee.si/types/poison)/[Normal](https://pokee.si/types/normal)-type Pokémon, the Toxic Monkey Pokémon, number 945 (#0945) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the [Paldea](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/paldea) region. It is 0.7 m tall and weighs 27.2 kg.

Grafaiai is the Toxic Monkey Pokémon, a hooded, aye-aye-like graffiti artist that paints trees with its own poisonous saliva. The Pokédex says each Grafaiai has one personal pattern and paints it over and over for its whole life.

## Lore

### Biology

Grafaiai is a small primate, 0.7 m tall and 27.2 kg, with a black upper body that looks like a hoodie, dark blue-grey limbs, a white face with huge yellow-green eyes and four tufts of blonde hair. Each hand has three fingers, and the middle one is several times longer than the others, coated in poisonous saliva.

### Behaviour

Bulbapedia calls Grafaiai moody, detail-minded and solitary, often fighting other Pokémon, even other Grafaiai, over territory. It is nocturnal: at night it paints patterns on trees, which marks its territory and, Bulbapedia adds, lures Bug Pokémon with a sweet scent.

### Habitat

The Pokédex says it paints trees in forests. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Tagtree Thicket and Paldea's North Province.

### Diet

Bulbapedia says its diet includes Berries and Bug Pokémon, and the Pokédex says what it eats sets the colour of its saliva.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Unburden and Poison Touch, which can poison what it touches, with Prankster hidden. It learns the Normal-type status move Doodle on evolving, and Bulbapedia says no other Pokémon can learn it. Poison Jab, Gunk Shot and Knock Off fill out its moves. With 110 base Speed and 95 Attack it is a fast attacker.

### Name origin

Grafaiai blends 'graffiti' and 'aye-aye', and may also nod to Urdaibai, a Spanish nature reserve. The Japanese name is Taggingru (タギングル), which may combine 'tagging', a style of graffiti signature, with 猿 saru ('monkey').

### Design inspiration

Grafaiai looks modelled on the aye-aye, which shares its long middle finger, and on the slow loris, the only known venomous primate. The tree painting may nod to the painted trees of the Oma forest, a public artwork in Spain's Urdaibai reserve. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Grafaiai evolves from Shroodle at level 28.

### In the games

Grafaiai is a wild Pokémon and a 4-star and 6-star Tera Raid Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted. In Legends: Z-A it appears in the Mega Dimension DLC, in Hyperspace Lumiose's Normal-type and Poison-type wild zones.

### In the anime

Grafaiai debuted in Pokémon Horizons in 'Sparkle! The Glow of Flame and Art'. Ryan owns one in 'The Dusk Ball That Wouldn't Open'.

### Fun facts

- It was first teased on 29 August 2022 with pictures of the patterns it paints, and fully revealed on 1 September 2022.
- No Pokémon other than Grafaiai and Shroodle has the Poison and Normal type combination.
- Bulbapedia notes that primates, rodents and treeshrews all belong to one superorder of mammals, which may be why a Pokémon with a treeshrew-like snout evolves into a primate.
