Grapploct is a [Fighting](https://pokee.si/types/fighting)-type Pokémon, the Jujitsu Pokémon, number 853 (#0853) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 8 and comes from the [Galar](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/galar) region. It is 1.6 m tall and weighs 39 kg.

Grapploct is the Jujitsu Pokémon, an octopus made entirely of muscle that leaves the sea in search of opponents worth fighting. The Legends: Z-A Pokédex says even the most powerfully built Pokémon cannot wriggle out of its hold.

## How to pronounce Grapploct

## Lore

### Biology

Grapploct is a blue amphibious octopus, 1.6 m tall and 39 kg, with a jagged yellow eyemask marking. A breathing organ on the left of its head can also squirt ink, says Bulbapedia. It uses four tentacles as arms and three as legs, and the eighth is tied around its waist as a martial artist's belt. The Pokédex says its body is nothing but muscle, which makes its tentacle grapples tremendously powerful.

### Behaviour

Grapploct comes ashore looking for a rival to try its skills on, then goes back to the sea once the battle is over. It holds opponents down on the ground with its prized tentacles.

### Habitat

In Sword and Shield it is found on Route 9 and in Max Raid Battles at North Lake Miloch and Dusty Bowl, and in Legends: Z-A it arrives with the Mega Dimension DLC, in Hyperspace Lumiose's 4-star Fighting wild zones.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Limber and Technician (hidden). Octolock traps the target so it cannot flee and keeps lowering its Defense and Special Defense, and Bulbapedia says no other known Pokémon could learn it before Generation IX. It also learns Submission, Superpower, Bulk Up and Taunt. With 118 base Attack and 90 Defense it hits hard and takes a beating, but its 42 Speed is slow.

### Name origin

Grapploct may blend 'grapple', 'octopus' and 'locked'. The Japanese name is Otosupus (オトスパス), possibly from otosu ('to take someone down') plus 'octopus'.

### Design inspiration

Grapploct appears to be an octopus dressed as a jujutsu fighter, which fits its category name, with a face like a wrestling mask and a waist tentacle like a belt. Its blue and white colours may nod to the gi worn in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. These are fan readings, and no designer is credited.

### Evolution notes

Grapploct evolves from Clobbopus when it levels up while knowing Taunt.

### In the games

Players meet Grapploct as a wild Pokémon in Sword and Shield, where it debuted, and it is not in Scarlet and Violet. Its only place in Legends: Z-A is the Mega Dimension DLC.

### In the anime

Grapploct debuted in 'Solitary and Menacing!' as Bea's partner, first beating the Karate Master's Hitmonchan at the Fighting Dojo and then Ash's Riolu in a World Coronation Series battle.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says the logo of the Galar Police Station depicts a Grapploct.
- Bulbapedia suggests its design may pun on octopus wrestling, a 1960s US West Coast pastime of dragging a large octopus out of shallow water.
- In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Bea's Grapploct first appears inside a fantasy sequence, in 'Shocking!! Reunion in the Forest'.
