Wood Gecko Pokémon · Grass-type

![Grovyle official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/253.webp)

Grovyle is a [Grass](https://pokee.si/types/grass)-type Pokémon, the Wood Gecko Pokémon, number 253 (#0253) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 0.9 m tall and weighs 21.6 kg.

Grovyle is the leafy, dinosaur-like middle stage of the Treecko line, a Grass type so quick and well camouflaged that the Pokédex says nothing can hope to catch one once it bolts. Another entry credits its thigh muscles for explosive bursts of power.

## How to pronounce Grovyle

## Lore

### Biology

Grovyle is a green, bipedal reptile, 0.9 m tall and 21.6 kg, that looks like a theropod dinosaur. Its underside is red, with a belt-like green band across its belly. It has two clawed fingers on each hand, powerful legs with bird-like feet, long leaves on its wrists, a big leaf on its head and two leafy tails. That foliage camouflages it in forests and dense jungle.

### Behaviour

Grovyle is a master tree-climber. The Pokédex says it leaps from branch to branch with ease and moves with astounding speed and force.

### Habitat

The Pokédex lists forests, and Bulbapedia says Grovyle lives in forests and dense jungle. In Scarlet and Violet it is available through The Indigo Disk by evolving a Treecko.

### Powers

Overgrow strengthens its Grass moves when its HP is low, and Unburden is its hidden Ability. In Scarlet and Violet it learns Leaf Blade at level 40, after Giga Drain and ahead of Leaf Storm, and can use X-Scissor by TM. Base Speed 95 and Special Attack 85 make it a fast, special-leaning attacker.

### Name origin

Grovyle may combine 'grove', 'reptile' and possibly 'vine' or 'ivy'. The Japanese name is Juptile (ジュプトル), which Bulbapedia says may join 樹 ju (tree) with 'reptile' or 'raptor'; the original reading, Juputoru, matches 'raptor', as in velociraptor.

### Design inspiration

Like the rest of its line, Grovyle seems to draw on the leaf-tailed gecko. It also looks like a feathered dinosaur: Bulbapedia compares it to Dromaeosaurus and says the leaves on its tail resemble the feathered tail of Epidexipteryx. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Grovyle evolves from Treecko at level 16 and into Sceptile at level 36.

### In the games

Grovyle is best known as a major character in the main story of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky, which it returns to in Super Mystery Dungeon, after debuting in Ruby and Sapphire. In Sword and Shield's Expansion Pass it appears in Max Lair, and in Legends: Z-A it is found only in the Mega Dimension DLC.

### In the anime

Ash's Treecko grew into a Grovyle in 'Exploud and Clear!'. Sawyer's Treecko evolved mid-battle against Ash's Frogadier in 'Rivals: Today and Tomorrow!'.

### Fun facts

- In Pokémon Sleep, Bulbapedia says, even veteran researchers struggle to find a sleeping Grovyle because of its camouflage, and it has four sleep styles: Knee-Up, Dream-Stance, Leaf-Tucked and Atop-Belly.
- In 'What You Seed is What You Get', Natasha's Grovyle and Slugma teamed up to beat Ash's Corphish and Treecko in a Double Battle.
- A Trainer's Grovyle took part in the Pokémon Ping Pong Tournament in 'To Thine Own Pokémon Be True!'.
