Manipulate Pokémon · Psychic-type

![Grumpig official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/326.webp)

Grumpig is a [Psychic](https://pokee.si/types/psychic)-type Pokémon, the Manipulate Pokémon, number 326 (#0326) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 0.9 m tall and weighs 71.5 kg.

Grumpig is the Manipulate Pokémon, a psychic pig that performs a strange dance to bend other minds to its will. The Pokédex says the black pearls on its body amplify that power and are prized as works of art.

## How to pronounce Grumpig

Grumpig is pronounced **GRUM-pig**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Grumpig is 0.9 m tall and weighs 71.5 kg. Its upper body is purple and its lower half black, with a pink snout, large ears with black markings, a curly pink tail and oval eyes. It appears to have three shining black pearls that amplify its psychic waves: a pair of small ones on top of its head, plus a bigger, flatter one on its midsection.

### Behaviour

Grumpig channels its power through dance: the Pokédex says the odd steps are how it gains control over foes, and its snorting breath grows laboured while it works. The Emerald and HeartGold and SoulSilver entries add that its dancing style grew hugely popular abroad.

### Habitat

The Pokédex places it on mountains. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in Paldea's South Province (Area Four), North Province (Areas One and Two) and Dalizapa Passage, and in The Teal Mask you can evolve a Spoink. In Legends: Z-A the base game offers it only by trade, and it appears in the wild in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

### Powers

Grumpig learns Teeter Dance the moment it evolves in Scarlet and Violet, and attacks with Psychic, Psyshock, Zen Headbutt and Power Gem. Like Spoink it has Thick Fat or Own Tempo, with Gluttony hidden, which makes it eat a held Berry sooner than usual. Base Special Defense of 110 and Special Attack of 90 make it a sturdy special attacker.

### Name origin

Grumpig may combine 'grumpy' and 'pig', and may also involve 'grunt'. The Japanese name is Boopig (ブーピッグ), possibly from būbū, the Japanese oinking sound, and 'pig'.

### Design inspiration

Grumpig seems to be modelled on a pig, and the pearls-before-swine reading given for Spoink may apply to it too. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Grumpig evolves from Spoink at level 32 and has no further evolution.

### In the games

Players get Grumpig by evolving Spoink, as in Ruby and Sapphire, where it first appeared. Bulbapedia lists no major story role for it in the core series.

### In the anime

Grumpig debuted in 'Pokéblock, Stock, and Berry' as Coordinator Kelly's Pokémon, which she used in the Lilycove Contest. In 'An Oasis of Hope!', a bullying Grumpig takes control of a group of Spoink and Team Rocket uses it as a lure for a trap, until Ash's newly evolved Sliggoo defeats it.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says Magic Coat was Grumpig's signature move in Generation III, shared with Spoink, though breeding could still pass it to other Pokémon.
- Grumpig shares the Manipulate Pokémon category with Gothorita.
- In Pokémon Adventures, a herd of wild Grumpig attacks Ruby and Sapphire in 'VS. Grumpig I', and their defeat by Ruby's Mightyena makes Sapphire realise how strong Ruby really is.
