# Gyarados

Atrocious Pokémon · Water/Flying-type

![Gyarados official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/130.webp)

Gyarados is a [Water](https://pokee.si/types/water)/[Flying](https://pokee.si/types/flying)-type Pokémon, the Atrocious Pokémon, number 130 (#0130) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the [Kanto](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/kanto) region. It is 6.5 m tall and weighs 235 kg.

Gyarados is the Atrocious Pokémon, a sea serpent so violent that the Pokédex says it has destroyed cities, and in some regions it is called the deity of destruction. A change in the brain during evolution from Magikarp is blamed for the temper.

## How to pronounce Gyarados

Gyarados is pronounced **GYAIR-uh-dohs**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Listen to Gyarados said out loud:

In Japanese it is ギャラドス.

## Lore

### Biology

Gyarados is a mostly blue serpent, 6.5 m (21 ft 4 in) long and 235 kg (518.1 lb), with a yellow belly, yellow spots along each flank and a huge open mouth showing four pointed teeth. Females have white barbels and males blue ones.

### Behaviour

The Pokédex says a rampaging Gyarados has blood that stays hot until all is burnt to the ground, and that records mention rampages lasting a whole month. The Pokédex claims it shows up whenever the world is in conflict, and some people swear any place it visits is doomed. Even a harsh storm does not stop a rampage once it starts.

### Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is the water's edge, and Bulbapedia says it lives in both fresh and salty water. In Scarlet and Violet it is in Paldea's seas and Casseroya Lake, and in Kitakami. In Legends: Z-A the base game has it in Wild Zones 11 and 20, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds Hyperspace Lumiose.

### Powers

Intimidate lowers foes' Attack on entry, and the Hidden Ability is Moxie. Waterfall, Crunch, Dragon Dance, Hyper Beam and Hurricane make it a fierce attacker, with base Attack 125 and Special Defense 100. With Gyaradosite it Mega Evolves into Mega Gyarados, a Water and Dark type with Mold Breaker and a black underside; its Attack rises to 155 and its stat total to 640. The Legends: Z-A Pokédex says it jets water from its sides at supersonic speed.

### Name origin

The English name is the Japanese one, Gyarados (ギャラドス), unchanged. Ken Sugimori said the name has no particular origin and was picked for its 'force', though Bulbapedia suggests links to words for slaughter and devastate.

### Design inspiration

Ken Sugimori designed Gyarados. It looks modelled on a Chinese dragon and a koinobori carp streamer, and Bulbapedia also sees sea monsters from old maps and Japanese earthquake dragon myths. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Gyarados evolves from Magikarp at level 20 and does not evolve further.

### In the games

A red Gyarados is a story battle at the Lake of Rage in Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver. A Generation I original, it could only be obtained in Red and Blue by evolving a Magikarp.

### In the anime

Lance's red Gyarados rampaged in 'Talkin' 'Bout an Evolution' and 'Rage Of Innocence' until Lance caught it. Lysandre's Shiny Gyarados, which can Mega Evolve, battled Ash and Alain in 'Coming Apart at the Dreams!'.

### Fun facts

- In the Red and Green beta, its English name was Skulkraken, and translator Nob Ogasawara says he suggested keeping the Japanese name after Nintendo of America's legal team rejected it.
- Bulbapedia counts Gyarados as the most common Pokémon among core series boss Trainers, with 12 appearances.
- Despite being part Flying, Gyarados could not naturally learn any Flying move before Generation VII.
- Bulbapedia says Gyarados is the sole Flying member of Egg Group Water 2, and that only it and Magikarp sit in both Water 2 and Dragon.

## Pokédex entries

I suspect this Pokémon to be the true identity of a dragon written of in ancient texts, which claimed that it razed an entire village with white-hot beams from its maw. *(Legends: Arceus)*

Once it begins to rampage, a Gyarados will burn everything down, even in a harsh storm. *(Platinum, Black, White, Black 2, White 2, Shield)*

It has an extremely aggressive nature. The Hyper Beam it shoots from its mouth totally incinerates all targets. *(FireRed, Sword)*

Brutally vicious and enormously destructive. Known for totally destroying cities in ancient times. *(Yellow, Let’s Go, Pikachu!, Let’s Go, Eevee!)*

The energy from evolution stimulated its brain cells strongly, causing it to become very ferocious. *(Ultra Moon)*

It fires hyper beams in all directions, burning the surrounding area to ash. There are some regions where it's called “the deity of destruction.” *(Ultra Sun)*
