Happiny is a [Normal](https://pokee.si/types/normal)-type Pokémon, the Playhouse Pokémon, number 440 (#0440) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 4 and comes from the [Sinnoh](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/sinnoh) region. It is 0.6 m tall and weighs 24.4 kg.

Happiny is a baby Pokémon that has not learned to lay eggs yet, so it carries a round white stone in its pouch instead and treats it like treasure. Take the stone without asking and it throws a tantrum.

## Lore

### Biology

Happiny is a small, soft, light pink Pokémon shaped like an egg, with a curly ponytail-like tuft on its head, a trio of round bumps across its forehead and a pink circle on each cheek. Its rubbery red pouch, with a white stripe round the top, is easy to stuff things into. It stands 0.6 m tall and weighs 24.4 kg, and it is female-only.

### Behaviour

Happiny copies Chansey by carrying a round, white, egg-shaped stone, and it is willing to lend it to friends. It sometimes loads its pouch so full that it cannot move, wanders around people's feet and trips them, and likes playing house with children.

### Habitat

No Pokédex entry names a habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it hatches whenever Chansey or Blissey is bred, and it also lives in the wild in South and West Province areas and at the Pokémon League; The Indigo Disk adds more biomes. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Happiny can have Natural Cure or Serene Grace, with Friend Guard hidden. It learns Pound, Copycat, Defense Curl, Sweet Kiss, Disarming Voice, Covet and Charm. With a base stat total of only 220, it is mainly a stepping stone to Chansey.

### Name origin

Happiny may combine 'happiness' with 'tiny' or 'teeny', and may also play on 'happenstance'. The Japanese name is Pinpuku (ピンプク), perhaps from pinku ('pink') and fuku (福, 'good fortune').

### Design inspiration

Emi Yoshida designed Happiny. It shares traits with babies, such as soft skin, a ponytail and a nappy-like pouch, and it resembles an egg cup. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Happiny evolves into Chansey when levelled up in daylight while holding an Oval Stone.

### In the games

Happiny turns up in the wild in all five areas of Legends: Arceus. It was introduced in Generation IV as the baby form of Chansey and Blissey.

### In the anime

Brock's Happiny debuted in 'One Big Happiny Family!', hatching from his Egg. Unlike the games' Attack of 5, the anime's Happiny is very strong, and she evolved into Chansey in 'The Brockster Is In!'.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says no other Pokémon evolves twice by levelling up under a condition, first through a held item and then through high friendship.
- Every move Happiny learns by levelling up in Legends: Arceus was one it could not legally learn before.
- A Happiny figure was one of the plastic toys in the 2008 Burger King Pokémon promotion.
