# Haxorus

Axe Jaw Pokémon · Dragon-type

![Haxorus official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/612.webp)

Haxorus is a [Dragon](https://pokee.si/types/dragon)-type Pokémon, the Axe Jaw Pokémon, number 612 (#0612) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 5 and comes from the [Unova](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/unova) region. It is 1.8 m tall and weighs 105.5 kg.

Haxorus, the Axe Jaw Pokémon, is a Dragon type with prized tusks sharp enough, the Pokédex says, to slice through a thick steel column or a metal transmission tower at a single stroke. It is kindly until someone touches them.

## How to pronounce Haxorus

Haxorus is pronounced **hak-SOR-us**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Haxorus is a bipedal dragon, 1.8 m tall and 105.5 kg, covered in olive-green armour across its back and most of its front, with black skin on its torso, thighs and tail tip. Its black tusks, edged in red, look like axe blades, and it has red talons on small, three-fingered hands. The Pokédex calls the tusks its pride and joy.

### Behaviour

Haxorus is docile, but the Pokédex says it turns furious if anyone touches its tusks, and Black's entry calls it relentless when defending its territory. The sensible rule is never to touch the tusks.

### Habitat

The Pokédex says Haxorus nests in caves and abandoned mines. In Scarlet and Violet it appears only by evolving Fraxure or in 5-star and 6-star Tera Raid Battles, and The Indigo Disk adds a fixed one in the Canyon Biome once you have caught Terapagos.

### Diet

According to the Pokédex, it licks dirt for the minerals that keep its tusks in top condition.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Rivalry and Mold Breaker, which lets its attacks ignore Abilities that would block them, with Unnerve hidden. It hits with Outrage and Dragon Claw, builds up with Dragon Dance and Swords Dance, and can learn Draco Meteor and Close Combat by TM. With a base Attack of 147 and Speed of 97 it is a heavy physical attacker.

### Name origin

Haxorus may combine 'hack', 'axe', -saurus (from the Greek for 'lizard') and possibly 'hazardous'. The Japanese name is Ononokus (オノノクス), which may blend ono ('axe'), ononoku ('to tremble') and the English 'axe', and possibly -onychus ('claw').

### Design inspiration

Haxorus is likely based on dinosaurs: Bulbapedia suggests Heterodontosaurus, an early Jurassic dinosaur with protruding teeth, and its tusks resemble battle-axe blades. Junichi Masuda said it was the first Pokémon designed for Black and White, and Ken Sugimori told Nintendo Dream a newly hired designer drew it while Platinum was still in development, with Axew and Fraxure designed afterwards.

### Evolution notes

Haxorus evolves from Fraxure at level 48 and is the final form of the line.

### In the games

Haxorus is the signature Pokémon of Drayden, the Opelucid City Gym Leader, whose team closes with one in Black, Black 2 and White 2. Iris uses one too, as the Gym Leader in White and the Unova Champion in Black 2 and White 2. In Scarlet and Violet it is a Tera Raid boss, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Iris's Axew finally evolved into Haxorus in 'Thrash of the Titans!'. Drayden's Haxorus beat Iris's Excadrill in a flashback in 'Iris and Excadrill Against the Dragon Buster!' and tied with it in 'Drayden Versus Iris: Past, Present, and Future!'.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia describes Haxorus's tusks as unbreakable, so unlike its earlier stages it never has to worry about losing them.
- Haxorus and Druddigon, both introduced in Generation V, were the first fully evolved Dragon types with no second type.
- Bulbapedia lists a single Shiny Haxorus in the Nature Preserve of Black 2 and White 2.
