Big Boss Pokémon · Dark/Flying-type

![Honchkrow official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/430.webp)

Honchkrow is a [Dark](https://pokee.si/types/dark)/[Flying](https://pokee.si/types/flying)-type Pokémon, the Big Boss Pokémon, number 430 (#0430) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 4 and comes from the [Sinnoh](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/sinnoh) region. It is 0.9 m tall and weighs 27.3 kg.

Honchkrow is the Big Boss Pokémon, a crow dressed like a crime boss in a fedora. One cry from it, the Pokédex says, summons more than a hundred Murkrow, and it lets them do the fighting.

## How to pronounce Honchkrow

Honchkrow is pronounced **HONCH-kroh**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Honchkrow is a dark blue crow whose feathers look like formal clothes: a wide-brimmed fedora of a crest with spikes at the back, and a white chest tuft like a cravat. The insides of its wings and the tip of its tail are red. It is 0.9 m (2'11") tall and weighs 27.3 kg (60.2 lbs).

### Behaviour

Honchkrow is ruthless. The Pokédex says it never forgives a Murkrow that fails or betrays it, and it hunts down any follower that does. It idles in its nest grooming while its Murkrow bring food. Its deep cry gathers so many Murkrow that the sky goes black, which earns it the nickname Summoner of Night.

### Habitat

Bulbapedia says it scavenges in swamps, forests, towns and plains. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild in Paldea's North Province, around Casseroya Lake and in the Dalizapa Passage, with a fixed one in North Province Area Two.

### Powers

Its Abilities are Insomnia, Super Luck and the hidden Moxie, which raises its Attack each time it knocks a foe out. It fights with Sucker Punch, Night Slash and Dark Pulse, boosts itself with Nasty Plot and punishes foes with Comeuppance. With 100 base HP and 105 Special Attack it is a strong mixed attacker, though its defences are low.

### Name origin

Honchkrow may combine 'honcho' (boss) with 'crow'. Its Japanese name, Dongkarasu (ドンカラス), may join don (a mafia boss) and karasu (crow).

### Design inspiration

Honchkrow appears to be based on a crow or raven, and its hat-like crest and cravat make it look like a crime boss with Murkrow as its gang. Its broom-like tail and a crescent moon mark by its eye keep the witch theme. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Honchkrow evolves from Murkrow when a Dusk Stone is used on it.

### In the games

Honchkrow comes from using a Dusk Stone on Murkrow, as in Diamond and Pearl, where it debuted. It also appears in 5 star Tera Raid Battles in Scarlet and Violet, but not in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Paul's Murkrow was revealed to have evolved into a Honchkrow in a flashback in 'Lost Leader Strategy!', and it battled Ash's Turtwig in 'Aiding the Enemy!'. A flock met Ash's group on a treasure island in 'Mystery on a Deserted Island!'.

### Fun facts

- A former Nintendo of America product marketing assistant manager said one Generation IV Pokémon was nearly named 'Doncrowleone', after The Godfather's Don Vito Corleone; he did not say which, but Bulbapedia thinks Honchkrow is likely, given its Japanese name.
- Its base Attack of 125 is the highest of any Dark or Flying type introduced in Generation IV.
- Bulbapedia says Pokémon Sleep shows it dozing on guard over a pile of jewels, which its Murkrow are theorised to have gathered.
