Huntail is a [Water](https://pokee.si/types/water)-type Pokémon, the Deep Sea Pokémon, number 367 (#0367) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the [Hoenn](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/hoenn) region. It is 1.7 m tall and weighs 27 kg.

Huntail is the Deep Sea Pokémon, a long-bodied Water type that lures prey with a glowing, fish-shaped tail. Old tradition holds that a Huntail stranded on the shore means bad luck is on its way.

## How to pronounce Huntail

## Lore

### Biology

Huntail is a light blue, serpentine Pokémon with orange fins along its spine, a fan-like fin on its head and white spots ringed in orange. Its tail is shaped like a small fish, with eye-spots that light up. It is 1.7 m tall and weighs 27 kg. The Pokédex says its thick, sturdy spine lets it withstand the pressure of the deep sea.

### Behaviour

Huntail wags its fish-shaped tail to draw in prey, then gulps the prey down whole as soon as it gets close. The Ultra Sun Pokédex says it is not the strongest swimmer, and the Sapphire entry says it swims with a snake-like wiggle.

### Habitat

The Pokédex places Huntail deep in the sea. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon it can be found around Alola's Route 15, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Sword and Shield, Scarlet and Violet, and Legends: Z-A.

### Powers

Swift Swim doubles its Speed in rain, and Water Veil, its hidden Ability, prevents burns. It bites with Crunch, Ice Fang and Sucker Punch, uses Aqua Tail, and learns Hydro Pump at level 50. With base Attack 104 and Defense 105 it is a physical attacker that is tougher than it is fast.

### Name origin

Huntail may combine 'hunt', the Japanese hanten ('speck' or 'fleck') and 'tail'. The game data gives its Japanese name as Huntail too (ハンテール).

### Design inspiration

Huntail appears to be based on deep-sea fish such as the gulper eel, viperfish or moray eel, and its orange crest and fins recall the oarfish. The Ultra Moon Pokédex line about beaching may reference a Japanese and Taiwanese belief that stranded rare fish warn of earthquakes or tsunamis. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Huntail evolves from Clamperl when it is traded holding a Deep Sea Tooth, and it does not evolve further.

### In the games

Huntail is one half of Clamperl's trade-evolution fork, introduced in Ruby and Sapphire. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon it can be met in the wild, through SOS Battles and fishing.

### In the anime

In 'The Evolutionary War', it is common for people on the A-B-C Islands to own a Huntail, and a Clamperl only becomes a Huntail on Island C. In 'On Land, In the Sea, and to the Future!', a Huntail chases a group of Gorebyss and traps Goh's Dewgong, Chloe and her Eevee in a cave.

### Fun facts

- Though it is a pure Water type, Huntail's Poké Assist in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia is Dark (and Gorebyss's is Psychic).
- The Ruby Pokédex says people overlooked Huntail for ages because it lives at such extreme depths.
- Bulbapedia notes that Huntail's lure-like tail resembles Gorebyss's head.
