![Hydrapple official artwork](https://pokee.si/img/art/1019.webp)

Hydrapple is a [Grass](https://pokee.si/types/grass)/[Dragon](https://pokee.si/types/dragon)-type Pokémon, the Apple Hydra Pokémon, number 1019 (#1019) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the [Paldea](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/paldea) region. It is 1.8 m tall and weighs 93 kg.

Hydrapple is the Apple Hydra Pokémon, a Grass and Dragon type made of seven capricious syrpents living inside an apple of red syrup. The Pokédex says its true power is unleashed only when, rarely, all their moods line up.

## How to pronounce Hydrapple

## Lore

### Biology

Hydrapple is 1.8 m tall and weighs 93 kg. Bulbapedia, citing the official site, says it is made of seven symbiotic creatures called syrpents, each with leaf-shaped eyestalks and a long green body. The central syrpent is the longest and has two horns, one with an apple stuck on it. Sometimes five syrpents rise as heads while two show as tails, which shuffle the whole body along the ground.

### Behaviour

The Pokédex says the syrpent in the centre is the commander. Bulbapedia, citing the official site, says the seven have fickle temperaments and rarely work as a team.

### Habitat

Canon gives no natural habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it is found only by evolving Dipplin, in The Indigo Disk expansion, where it is number 163 in the Blueberry Pokédex.

### Powers

Its signature move Fickle Beam sometimes has every head fire together, doubling its power; Bulbapedia says only Hydrapple learns it. Its Abilities are Supersweet Syrup, which lowers opposing evasion once on entry, and Regenerator, with Sticky Hold hidden. It also learns Draco Meteor, Energy Ball and Recover. With 120 base Special Attack and 110 Defense but only 44 Speed, it is a slow, bulky special attacker.

### Name origin

Hydrapple blends 'hydra', 'dragon' and 'apple', and 'syrpent' may blend 'syrup' or 'wyrm' with 'serpent'. The Japanese name is Kamitsuorochi (カミツオロチ), which may combine ka ('fruit'), kamitsu ('nectar') and Yamata no Orochi, the eight-headed serpent of Japanese myth.

### Design inspiration

Hydrapple seems to draw on many-headed serpents: the Lernaean Hydra, Yamata no Orochi, a northern Tōhoku serpent called Hachirō-Tarō, and Ladon, the dragon that guarded the golden apples. Its quarrelling heads may allude to the Apple of Discord, and like Applin's other forms it plays on a worm in an apple. These are fan readings.

### Evolution notes

Dipplin evolves into Hydrapple when it levels up while knowing Dragon Cheer. Dipplin itself evolves from Applin with a Syrupy Apple.

### In the games

Hydrapple arrived with The Indigo Disk. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### In the anime

Hydrapple debuted in Pokémon Horizons, where it battled the Rising Volt Tacklers.

### Fun facts

- Bulbapedia says Hydrapple and the rest of its line stand alone as Pokémon belonging to the Grass and Dragon Egg Groups together.
- Gigantamax only existed in Sword and Shield, so Bulbapedia notes Hydrapple is the sole final form of Applin without a Gigantamax form.
- Bulbapedia says Dipplin is number 1011 and Hydrapple is 1019, making them the only evolutionary relatives introduced in a single generation that do not sit next to each other in National Pokédex order.
