Iron Boulder is a [Rock](https://pokee.si/types/rock)/[Psychic](https://pokee.si/types/psychic)-type Pokémon, the Paradox Pokémon, number 1022 (#1022) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the [Paldea](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/paldea) region. It is 1.5 m tall and weighs 162.5 kg.

Iron Boulder is a Rock and Psychic Paradox Pokémon, a metallic bull whose axe-like horns hold stored energy that it uses to plough through everything in its path. A dubious magazine claimed it was a Terrakion modified by an evil organisation, but the Pokédex also says its name comes from a strange object recorded in an old book.

## How to pronounce Iron Boulder

Iron Boulder is pronounced **EYE-ern BOHL-der**. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

## Lore

### Biology

Iron Boulder is a round, reflective, bull-like Pokémon, 1.5 m tall and 162.5 kg. A rounded black forehead sits above a grey face with digital orange eyes, and two orange-edged, axe-like horns curve forward and can open into round blades as wide as its head. Bulbapedia says its head can rotate fully, and that the orange glow on its head, horns and feet fades to black when it sleeps.

### Behaviour

Little is known about how Iron Boulder lives. Perrin's in-game rumour, quoted by Bulbapedia, says it charges its horns with energy and uses them to plough through everything in its path. Bulbapedia, citing the official site, says that energy builds up from light stored in its head.

### Habitat

Canon gives no natural habitat. In The Indigo Disk it is found in Area Zero once you start Perrin's questline, and it is a Violet exclusive: Scarlet players must trade for it. It is number 239 in the Blueberry Pokédex.

### Powers

Its Ability Quark Drive raises its highest stat on Electric Terrain or when it holds Booster Energy. Its signature move Mighty Cleave wields the light on its head to cleave the target and hits even through protection; only Iron Boulder learns it. It also uses Psycho Cut, Sacred Sword, Megahorn and Stone Edge. Its Speed of 124 is the highest of any Rock or Psychic type introduced in Generation IX, and with 120 base Attack it is a fast physical attacker.

### Name origin

Iron Boulder is literal. The Japanese name is Tetsunoiwao (テツノイワオ), which reads as tetsu no iwao, 'iron boulder'.

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Iron Boulder is based on Terrakion, designed by Takao Unno. Its extended blades resemble the pointed head of a spade, according to Bulbapedia. This is a fan reading.

### In the games

Iron Boulder is one of the Paradox Pokémon added by The Indigo Disk for Violet. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

### Fun facts

- Iron Boulder and Gouging Fire were not shown to the public before The Indigo Disk was released, Bulbapedia says.
- Bulbapedia says Iron Boulder cannot learn Rock Slide, which makes it the only Rock type that cannot, apart from Cornerstone Mask Ogerpon.
- It is the heaviest Psychic type introduced in Generation IX.
- Its 108 base Special Defense is the highest of any Rock type introduced in Generation IX.
