Iron Thorns is a [Rock](https://pokee.si/types/rock)/[Electric](https://pokee.si/types/electric)-type Pokémon, the Paradox Pokémon, number 995 (#0995) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the [Paldea](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/paldea) region. It is 1.6 m tall and weighs 303 kg.

Iron Thorns is a green robotic dinosaur, and the only Pokémon that is both Rock and Electric type. The Scarlet Pokédex says a dubious magazine once presented a similar Pokémon as a Tyranitar from a billion years in the future.

## How to pronounce Iron Thorns

## Lore

### Biology

Iron Thorns is 1.6 m tall and weighs 303 kg. It is a bipedal robot in green metal armour, with black claws, jaw and tail tip. Parts of its torso and legs are transparent and show a glowing green substance, and retractable spikes of the same material sit on its back. The Violet Pokédex says several of its notable features match an object named Iron Thorns in an expedition journal.

### Behaviour

An in-game magazine says Iron Thorns is coolheaded, prefers to avoid unnecessary fights and seems highly intelligent. According to Bulbapedia, it powers down to sleep, and the green light along its body and spikes goes black.

### Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat, but the magazine reports it in a certain cave in Paldea. In Violet it is found in a rocky part of Area Zero, and Scarlet players can only get one by trade.

### Powers

Its Ability Quark Drive raises its highest battle stat, Attack, on Electric Terrain or when it holds Booster Energy. It starts with Rock Throw and Iron Defense and later learns Rock Slide, Sandstorm, Wild Charge, Pin Missile, Earthquake, Stealth Rock and Stone Edge. With 134 Attack it is a hard-hitting physical attacker.

### Name origin

The English name probably refers to the spikes on its back, and the Violet Pokédex notes that an expedition journal uses the same name for an object. The Japanese name is Tetsunoibara (テツノイバラ), which Bulbapedia reads as 'iron thorn'.

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia names Tyranitar as its base and, in a wider sense, kaiju, especially mechanical ones. No designer is credited, and these are fan readings.

### In the games

Iron Thorns headlined a Tera Raid spotlight event alongside Sandy Shocks, after debuting in Scarlet and Violet. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### Fun facts

- It knows Fire Fang, Ice Fang and Thunder Fang from level 1.
- At 303 kg it is the heaviest Rock type introduced in Generation IX, and its Defense of 110 is the highest of any Electric type from that generation.
- Bulbapedia says it may reference the Big Monster Series movies in Pokéstar Studios in Black 2 and White 2, which feature mechanical Tyranitar.
