Iron Treads is a [Ground](https://pokee.si/types/ground)/[Steel](https://pokee.si/types/steel)-type Pokémon, the Paradox Pokémon, number 990 (#0990) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the [Paldea](https://pokee.si/guide/regions/paldea) region. It is 0.9 m tall and weighs 240 kg.

Iron Treads is a Ground and Steel Paradox Pokémon that curls into a wheel and rolls over its opponents, and nobody can say for sure where it came from. The Scarlet Pokédex says it closely resembles a weapon that a paranormal magazine claimed aliens sent to Earth.

## How to pronounce Iron Treads

## Lore

### Biology

Iron Treads is 0.9 m tall and weighs 240 kg. It has a round grey metal body, a black underbelly, short black tusks and a pixelated screen for a face that usually shows angry red eyes. A ridged black tread with red glowing patterns runs from its back over its head, and plates on its legs pull back so it can roll up like a wheel. The Violet Pokédex says it resembles an object in an old expedition journal and notes that sightings have only happened in recent years.

### Behaviour

Bulbapedia describes Iron Treads as cruel by nature, rolling at its target and leaving a trail like scorched earth. It switches itself off to sleep, rocking back and forth in its wheel shape while the red glow on its tread turns black. An in-game magazine mentions an unproven rumour that it is a weapon built with technology from beyond this world.

### Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat, but the same magazine reports sightings in a dry part of Paldea. In Violet it is found in Area Zero, and Scarlet players can only get one by trade.

### Powers

Its Ability Quark Drive raises its highest battle stat, which for Iron Treads is Defense, while Electric Terrain is active or if it holds Booster Energy. It knows Electric Terrain from level 1 and so can start its own trigger, and it also learns Rollout, Earthquake, Iron Head, Knock Off and Wild Charge. Steel Roller, which fails unless a terrain is on the field, pairs neatly with that. With 120 base Defense and 112 base Attack it is a tough physical attacker.

### Name origin

The English name simply describes an iron machine with treads. The Japanese name is Tetsunowadachi (テツノワダチ), which Bulbapedia reads as 'iron treads'.

### Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says Iron Treads is modelled on Donphan and so, by extension, possibly an elephant, with spherical robots and tyre treads mixed in. The panels on its body look like LED displays, and curling its tread into a ring may recall a monowheel, a one-wheeled vehicle that carries its rider inside the wheel. No designer is credited, and these are fan readings.

### In the games

In Violet, a giant Iron Treads is the Quaking Earth Titan, a boss fought in Asado Desert for the Sour Herba Mystica it guards; the species debuted in Scarlet and Violet. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

### Fun facts

- Scarlet's version of the Quaking Earth Titan is Great Tusk, which Bulbapedia names as Iron Treads' counterpart, so each game has its own wheel-or-tusk boss.
- In Pokémon Adventures the Titan beat Violet and Arven the first time they challenged it, and they only won after returning with Kofu and Saguaro.
- Among Pokémon introduced in Generation IX, its Speed of 106 makes it the fastest Ground type and the fastest Steel type.
